Would you not take your child to a playdate if s/he had a small cold?

DS started having a small cough today. No fever and no runny nose. Not sure if I should cancel a playdate tomorrow. I know I dont mind if another kid had a little cough or runny nose.

Do you still go on playdates?
Do you mind if a kid comes over if they have a cold?

If it's a clear runny nose or cough at the end of a cold I don't mind. If it's the start of something I really would prefer them not at the play date.

I would call the mom and be honest, then ask how she feels about it.

I just emailed the mom. I'll see what she says. Thanks.

Ditto! The age would also be a factor. Are they at an age where they are putting things in their mouth still???

It is a playdate for 2-3 year olds.

I would call the mom as you did.

Me, I would be annoyed if someone brought their kid over with the START of a virus etc.

You did the right thing.

Well DS' little friend came over the other day and he was coughing and had a runny nose. I was not happy. It's 2 weeks before Christmas and I'm pg too so I was annoyed that I didn't have the option to reschedule.

I always text or call the person and let them decide. I just wish people would do that in return, especially now that I have a newborn.

Cancel. My DD just went to a playdate last week. The child had a cold. My DD now her one of her first really bad colds that I know she got at the playdate. She will miss school all week now.

I would have preferred the other person reschedule. Its only a playdate, can be any other day.

Yeah I agree.

Last month in DD's Art Class 2 little kids came in (siblings) for a trial SICK! Like clearly sick, noses were dripping onto the playdough! Coughing sneezing and I was REALLY annoyed!

And of course then my DD was sick a few days later with a horrendous cold.

Just irks me sooo much!

I would not take my child. It's simply not worth it, playdates are a dime a dozen and can be rescheduled.

I would also take the higher road and simply cancel the playdate myself, instead of putting the ball in the other mom's court and making her be the bad guy. Trust me, she would be grateful for this.

I call or cancel. I would say most often I just cancel--my older DS has asthma and a cold is not just a cold to him. Hope your DS feels better! Chat Icon

I would def reschedule or at least let the mom know so they can have a heads up and decide what they want to do. I cant tell you how many times we've had playdates with SIL and her DS and we get there and she says he has a mild fever or a a runny nose or was throwing up last night. I'm like ummm why didnt you let me know cause we wouldnt have come! I think its inconsiderate not to let them know, IMO.

Re: Would you not take your child to a playdate if s/he had a small cold?

Since DS is in daycare FT, I have no issues with having a play date if the other child has a cold but would appreciate a call first letting me know. (I always say it doesn't matter to me, bc it makes no difference!) So I would def. let the mom know and let her decide what she is comfortable with.

Re: Would you not take your child to a playdate if s/he had a small cold?

Usually I err on the side of caution - unless it's a lingering cough after the sickness is long gone I would usually cancel. But, that said, we have had MANY MANY playdates with kids with runny noses etc. Now, at this point in our lives (I have a 4 yr old and a 22 mo old) it really doesn't bother me that much. Yeah, if the kid has a fever - keep him home but, if it's something you would send your child to school with then I feel like - what's the difference - he's already played with him at school Chat Icon That said, if I had a baby in the house or I was pg - I would feel completely different and would be mad.

Also, I know some are suggesting you ask the mom - I would NOT do this. Unless this is someone you are beyond comfortable with. I absolutely despise when people do this to me. It puts you in such an awkward position and I have honestly never said no even when I really wanted to and then, I was more annoyed then anything. I sort of feel like you need to make the call on your own. If you feel you need to ask - then I would not bring them. That's my motto.

When someone showed up with their 3 year old sick daughter to see my newborn twins straight from the NICU i was pi$$ed and told her to leave (nicely but FIRM). I really don't get why people bring sick kids around young babies? Taking care of a sick kid is no fun and not worth any playdate. I personally would not even ask, I would email/text/call and decline.

I call and either leave it up to the other parent or reschedule. I was supposed to have a play date here last Tuesday but we all got sick so I called the mom and rescheduled for yesterday. I would want the same courtesy extended to me as well.
