Would you give the MMR before going on a cruise?

Once again I find myself in this predicament.

With Jack, when he was 13 months we went to Italy. My ped said under no circumstances should I take him to Italy without the MMR. I agreed.

Now, I wanted to delay the shot with Tyler until 18 months. He will be 16 months when we go on a cruise. It leaves out of Baltimore, goes to Disney, and Bahamas I believe. So, I would have to give it to him when he turns 15 months.

Is it necessary to give it to him before taking a cruise? Is that considered the same thing?

WWYD?

I would totally wait...you do not want him to maybe get a fever on vaca. I would ask your ped to make sure

So many decisions with the kiddos!!

hmmmm see that confuses me big time....

My first reaction...NO WAY..what if he got sick and were away....or just wasnt himself....those shots stay with them for awhile.

BUT then I thought of the fact he's traveling......and maybe should get it....

SORRY I am NO help!!!

I would be just as confused. Ask peds

I would, but I didn't delay and don't plan to with my second DS. What does your ped think? Sounds like a fun cruise! Chat Icon

I would get it right after the holidays leaving me with a month and a half before the cruise IF I do get it before then.

I didn't even ask my ped about it yet because I just thought of it today driving home from the ped Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If you're planning on giving the shot at 15 months and the cruise isn't until 16 months then absolutely. DS had the "normal" MMR reaction (if they get one) which was the high fever and rash at 7-10 days after the shot, actually he got the fever on the 9th day and it lasted a couple of days. A month after the shot he'll be fine.

Well I don't think it is the same as going to Europe but I don't think I would take my girls on a cruise with out it. Remember most of the crew is from outside of the US and you don't know where they have been, what they are carrying, what shots they have had. Then you will also have the passengers and you again don't know anything about them - you might have non US citizens who with non-vaccinated children. I took DD#2 to disney without her shot - and I will be honest - it made me a bit nervous b.c there are many international travelers and it isn't unusual to hear of children getting chicken pox and who knows what ever in the parks (both girls got a stomach virus at the very end of the trip) - so I figure I was lucky that was the only thing they brought home with them. The difference between the cruise and the resort though is that you are in very close quarters on the ship - things like norwalk etc spread like wildfire - I would at least consider speaking with your pediatrician. Also I assume you will be making stops outside of the US? If so then I would probably go ahead and get it to be safe.

Re: Would you give the MMR before going on a cruise?

I didn't do the MMR before we went on the cruise with Bella.

The only thing we did was give the Hep A (or B, I always get those confused)

Erik spent a few months in Europe as an infant (8-10mths old). He hadn't had his MMR yet. It was fine.

I think you could go either way. But since he's old enough and you have time, I'd give him the MMR so you don't have to worry about it.

I totally would, way too many outbreaks these days... rather deal with a fever then the God forbid contraction of one of those.

I have a call in to my ped about it now, even though I have time I like to know what's ahead of me. Thanks for your input, I am def. leaning more towards giving it to him!

I think this is a good plan. Get it before the cruise so he has the vaccination. But with enough time to see if he has a reaction.

I was just in the same situation. My doctor wanted us to get it done before the cruise. The twins were 14 months at the time.

I would give him the shot. That is almost 6 weeks and if he is going to have a reaction it will probably be 2 weeks after the shot.
I also wouldn't go on a cruise ship if he couldn't get the shot.

Can he get it at 14 months?

He can get it any time after a year, I would like to hold out as long as possible, but would get it at least a month beforehand. We leave the end of Feb so I'm thinking right after the new year which would give me 6 weeks and ge would be almost 15 months
