Would you be upset/put off?

My sister is planning a week long vacation around 2 weeks before I am due (she is still planning, nothing is booked yet). SHe would be going away to Cancun or someplace far away. She is my only sister, and this is my 1st child. Im not exactly upset right now, but I will be if she misses the birth of my child bc she chose to take a vacation. Would you feel this is cutting it close? Would you be upset?

She doesnt have set vacation times, she can go whenever she wants, so I dont really understand why she would pick to be away when I could potentially have my child. I dont expect her to change her plans, but nothing is booked yet. Should I say something?

Am I being unreasonable?

Re: Would you be upset/put off?

I have 2 sisters who already have kids. This is my first. I would not be upset if they had something else going on.
I will be too wrapped up in my own little world with baby to care.

ETA: I missed the first 3 days of my nephew's life bc I had 2 jobs. I was sad when I found out he was born and I could not b there. My sis was fine with it bc I spent the next few yrs visiting him almost daily.

Since this is the first baby maybe your sister doesn't realize that most babies come with a +/- 2 weeks. I think you should tell her something like you hope she doesn't miss her niece/nephews arrival if baby decides to come early. That way she knows about it and she can make her decision from there.

I would completely understand if she couldnt come bc she had to work, but she is choosing to go on vacation, that she could do anytime. She doesnt have any kids, so she probably has no idea what the time frame is.....
I am just suprised that she would consider this.

It wouldn't bother me. If it's your first LO your more likely to be late than early.

Re: Would you be upset/put off?

My inlaws are going to El Salvador the day after I'm due. No one in their family there is sick or dying. Just vacation. And they picked that time bc the tickets were cheap. And my SIL is meeting them with her husband and my nieces a week later. This is what they had to say, "hopefuly you'll have the baby early"
Fcuk you all, my baby will come when s/he ready.

So to answer your question, yes!

Ditto. I would throw out that info to her and let her choose from there. I'm slowly learning that people will surprise you and you cant take this stuff to heart. You and your dh are the only ones that matter when it comes to the baby. Chat Icon

I would be upset, only because she can go away anytime. I know my sister would be mad at me too.

Re: Would you be upset/put off?

I would be a little upset. My dad is kind of doing the same thing. He goes to FL every winter and this year he's staying until right before my due date or possibly past it. I'm a little upset about it but I haven't said anything. Chat Icon

Re: Would you be upset/put off?

I wouldnt be upset. Just my opinion of course but I know my sister would be over to visit me and the baby right after her vacation. I wouldnt need her to be there right when i deliver. Honestly after you have the baby you are going to be dead tired you may not even want alot of visitors. I know i didnt LOL

Re: Would you be upset/put off?

2 weeks before you are due and this is your first? Nah... I wouldn't be upset. Not only will she most likely be back in time, I wouldn't expect her to put her life on pause for what? A month? (2 weeks prior to your due and 2 weeks after) just to make sure she doesn't miss the birth.

She doesn't have to be there for the exact moment of birth unless you were planning on having her in the delivery room with you, in which case I would think she would have known that by now. Otherwise, she'll be back in time to see baby within the first few days of birth and that's what matters.

You could say something if it makes you feel better but I wouldn't put a ton of emphasis on it.

Re: Would you be upset/put off?

I guess it all depends on how close you are with your sister. I'm not very close with my brother so while I do expect him to see the baby eventually, I doubt that he will miss work/ rush over as soon as he hears the news or wait in the hospital for the birth KWIM?

If I was very close to a sibling under the circumstances you described (first child, can take vacation anytime etc), then yes, I would be hurt and annoyed.
