Would you accept this gift?

I am expecting #2 in July. My mom asked me earlier this week if we had picked out nursery furniture yet, and I said no, as we were waiting to find out if the baby is a girl or boy (plus we wanted to get the room recarpeted first). My mom then says that she (and my father) would like to buy the nursery furniture!

I was super excited! I told DH, and he said "We aren't going to accept it though, right? That is too much"

Do you think it is too much? They also purchased the furniture for #1's room as a shower gift (#1 is their only grandchild right now). I was not expecting this offer. It was totally out of the blue, as we haven't even really thought about it yet since the baby isn't due until July. Thoughts?

I guess that depends on how expensive your taste is?

If your parents are comfortable enough to swing a gift like this -- let them.

I voted yes, but if your hubby really isn't comfortable with this, why don't they buy the crib and you buy the dresser(s), or vice versa?

Re: Would you accept this gift?

It would depend on if they can afford it. some families jus give big gifts as a norm. ILs offered to buy us furniture but we said it was too much and bought it ourselves. Then once the babies came they insisted on buying something big so they bought the glider and monitor which were almost as much as furniture.

Maybe he just feels funny because his parents didn't do as much? Our crib was on the pricier side and DH felt a little weird at first letting my parents buy it because his parents didn't do nearly as much for the baby as mine did. I told him they wouldn't have offered if they cared how much it was or couldn't do it but this was something they have always said they wanted to do for their grandchildren and I wasn't about to argue with them/hurt their feelings by declining their offer.

Maybe since they did it for your Dd they would like to make it a tradition. If they offer and can swing it, I would accept. It would be hard for me to tell my parents no to something like that without offending them or hurting their feelings.

My mom did this for #1 and wants to do it for the twins as well. I did not go all out with DS's furniture. She paid for a crib and dresser and we paid for the chair. For the twins I am going to try to find a cheaper crib since there are two! Since we have less space it doesn't have to be convertible.

Of course I would accept, my parents would insist. Such a nice, generous offer.

I would but I know my parents and they would only offer if they could afford it..... If I thought it would be a stretch I'd tell them no.

Re: Would you accept this gift?

I would totally accept it. My parents purchased a large part of DS' nursery (and we picked expensive things, not knowing they would pay) and I had no issue with it. They were happy to do it and it was their big gift - they didn't buy any little things. We are expecting DC2 now and I'm really hoping they are as generous the 2nd time aroundChat Icon

I would, if they could afford it..my parents bought my nursery furniture for my Dd, second pregnancy I used that furniture for the new baby since Dd already had her big girl room, but my mom took me shopping to buy all new baby items for the new baby instead

Re: Would you accept this gift?

My parents bought their first granchild's furniture. We never asked them, my mom requested to buy it. They bought DS another dresser for him for his christening, it was very generous.

As long as you aren't buying really expensive furniture, accept it.Chat Icon

without a second thought. That is very generous of them. Just confused why DH is so against it?

Thanks all! Dh's family doesn't really do big gifts, except for weddings, so I think that is why he is against it. He just isn't used to it, and my parents tend to go overboard with DD 1, so I don't think he expected them to do the same with #2.

I say pick something that isn't crazy over priced. IF they say they wanted to do it then they want to do it. Maybe they want to do for one that they did for the other!

Re: Would you accept this gift?

I voted yes. My parents offered the same thing, the nursery furniture. My husband is use to my parents giving us gifts like that. Before we got married he was against taking anything from them, now times have change.

Would you accept this gift?

I would 100% accept! It sounds like they don't want to play favorites and want to do for this baby as they did for you 1st. I know my mom is planning to re carpet and by the furniture for my son't big boy room. My husband was uncomfortable with it, but since she did it for our DD she is adamant she does it for DS. If they can do it, offered to do it, and want to do it I say let them and be thankful for such awesome parents.
