Would this concern you?
If a family member goes to smoke outside their home not around your DC, but still smells like smoke (hair, skin and clothes) and is watching your child. Is this called third hand smoke? I worry and yes I seem to worry a lot..lol I worry if it's going to affect my child at all. For example while hugging him and if he breathes in smoke from clothes, etc?

Yes, it does concern me. When my girls were first born, no one that smoked was allowed within a few feet of them. I have relaxed a bit now that they are 2, but I still don't like them to be around people that smell badly of smoke. We have a serious lung issue that runs in our family and my girls may be carriers of the disease. I take breathing clean air very seriously.

I hate smoke and am very sensitive to it.
Im not sure if im answering your question since i dont know the affects BUT. I dont think you can keep your baby from PEOPLE who smoke. If they dont do it in your house or car or around baby i think thats all you can ask for.
I feel the same way though! I want to say go shower and change before holding my kid but i cant....

Exactly! I do sometimes say that ( I'm pretty outspoken ) but, I realize the person can't always just drop everything and take a shower... On demand lol

but remember that it is their CHOICE to be a smoker and there are options to quit. If they want to be more involved in DC's life they should make attempts to change their situation.

REALLY Honestly...
I don't like second hand smoke & the smell of cigarette smoke... I almost killed my hubby when he had a few cigarettes 5 yrs ago.
But I was watched by my chain smoking grandpa when I was young. It was for hours a day, every day because my mom worked FT.
I'd go visit my chain smoking uncle all the time.
They both smoked outside.
I'm OK. (I have no lung issues to start though)
Being around a smoker used to be very, very common.
I think a visit for a few hours very occasionally will probably not kill your child.
It is ULTIMATELY your choice (but if you choose to go, don't feel like you are killing your child).

The smell would annoy me but I don't think it's dangerous to the baby. I'd ask the person to make sure they wash their hands before touching the baby, though.

Yes, it would concern me. I hate the smell of smoke and wouldn't want it all over my baby. I don't know how dangerous it is, but it's still gross.
Sometimes at parties DH and my brother will go off and have a cigar (both otherwise non-smokers) and I remember when DD was infant telling them they couldn't pick her up because they wreaked when they came back.

This. And that's besides it just being gross. I know people who smoke outside and have kids. Their kids still smell like smoke. I imagine if a smoker watched my kid he would also end up smelling like smoke. That's wouldn't be ok with me. Like someone else said, this person chooses to smoke it's not as if it's something they can't change. So if they want to be able to watch you child they have to quit. Also who would be watching the child while they are outside smoking?

Luckily no one in my family that is local smokes any more.
I wouldn't have someone that smokes even if not in front of my children babysit them. There is a lot of research on how bad third hand smoke is for LOs.
I wouldn't make a big deal about it if it was once or twice a year. Sorry you have to deal with that...
