Would finding a sitter like this be difficult?
Pick up at 2 schools at 2:20 and 2:40 Homework help for a 4th and 6th grader Done at 5pm
So, they need a car, clean license Need to be able to educated and patient enough to help with current HW standards Only need work for 3 hours on school days
My guess is this would be difficult to find?

It shouldn't be terribly difficult to find but it might be expensive (20+ per hour). I know people have taken jobs as after school sitters while they job-hunt during the day. They required cash for their pay. Good luck!

I don't know first hand but I've heard that a lot of high school students are so busy these days with their own academics and extracurricular that they don't have time to babysit.

Also, a HS student would have to have a license, be trustworthy enough to pick up DC at age 17(ish), and be able to get out of their school and over to DC's school by 2:20.

I would try care.com. There are people looking for all types of hours, times, etc. on there.
I found someone who watches DS about 1 hour a day, but she is flexible which is what I need.

I don't think it would be that difficult to find. Personally, I already watch kids those hours or I would do it. Look for a SAHM looking for some extra cash. Another poster mentioned 20+ an hour, which I think is a little crazy. I would do it for $40/day, without pay on non school days.

Post a flyer at a commuter college nearest to where you live. Most have info boards posting buy/sell, PT jobs etc. A college freshman/sophmore would be your best bet. Plus considering it would be a commuter school..they'd most likely have their own car.

I would use care.com. It shouldn't be too difficult and I doubt you would have to pay 20/hr. It might be hard for a college student with classes. You might need to find 2 separate people. My sitter has all of her classes on M and W so she's able to TTH and FR as needed. GL!

Re: Would finding a sitter like this be difficult?
A college student studying to become a teacher would be ideal. They are well versed in the new standards because it's all they know.
Common Core has really changed curriculum and practices in the elementary grades. I know doctors, lawyers and engineers that second guess the Common Core math problems. IMO, it's not the math, it's just that they are poorly written. All reading material is analyzed through a universal 5 step process called a "Close Read". I'm pretty sure most adults are not not well versed with either.

Your school district doesn't offer aftercare with homework assistance there?

We are in a queens district that gives a lot of hw!
6th grade has a program that DD is in but only has one hour to do HW
4th grade the hw isn't getting done by 5:30 and DD sits in the cafe or classroom from 2:45 til 5:30. She isn't even going outside to play
The group settings are not ideal both complain of noise and distraction

That just doesn't seem right that they are getting almost 3 hours of homework. I think I would be speaking to the teacher about that. That is NOT normal for 4th and even 6th grade.

I know but it's true!! 2 hours for my 4th grader and 3 plus studying for quizzes and tests for my 6th grader. It's a high performing school/district and we have parents who push their kids as well. The standards are very rigorous. It's all academics.
The principal sends a hw time limit policy in September and every year it's a joke!

That IS a joke, I would totally not be happy with that. The kids have no time to be kids or participate in afterschool activities. How insane!!

Re: Would finding a sitter like this be difficult?
I would recommend putting an ad with the specifics of what you need and want as well as what you will pay on sittercity.com or care.com.
I was recently in need of someone for pickup and watching my DDs for 1-2 hours a few afternoons a week. I got several applications from college students, but wound up finding a mom in her 30s who works p/t and has a small business of her own and was looking for side jobs. So there are people out there!

Can they take the bus? Might be easier to take the bus home and have the sitter at your house waiting

This is probably your best bet. I think most other people well versed in Common Core are probably teachers or moms with young kids who either work full time or are home helping their own children - i.e. all people who are unavailable.
I would put it on craigslist because I think a lot of college students would include that in their job search.
It's a tall order but if it's what you need, it's what you need. All it takes is one person!
