I agree with your husband.

And FTR I never would've offered to pay. I would've waited to see how they wanted to handle it.

Don't beat yourself up.

This.

Take the out. Mistakes happen, you took responsibility, and it's clear you're sorry. I wouldn't insist on paying them back.

You are definately being to hard on yourself. There is no way you should pay and I really don't think they would let you anyway.

I will say though that I love that you owned up to your mistake right way. I think that is a very admirable trait and wish more people would be like that. It would eliminate so much drama/issues. Your boss/company most likely thinks more highly of you admitting the mistake than the disappointment in the mistake.

I would not pay it back, unless my job literally depended on it - you made the offer, they said don't worry about it, so don't bring it up again. If they were likely to fire you over it then yeah it would be worth it in the grand scheme of life, but not here.

Also, I would not let it go with Amtrak. Keep going up the customer service line, let them know that you make business arrangements with them constantly, play up the fact that you were "out of the office that day due to pregnancy" or something to that effect and tell them that you're going to be on the hook personally for the $450 or may lose your job for it... see if it gets you anywhere. Let them know that you will sing their praises on social media, twitter, etc. if they can make this right for you. But if you're still unable to resolve it, I still wouldn't pay if they're giving you an out.

Being to hard on yourself and I know because I would be the same way. I hate making mistakes and I'm the hardest on myself. Take it as a lessened learned and you're not being a hypocrite.

Re: Work situation WWYD

Thank you all for your replies! It really helped me feel better and I know everyone makes mistakes and I'm just extra hard on myself.

To the pp re. Amtrak - I tried and spoke with several people. I explained about being closed (I work in a school and we are closed for spring break but I am coming in a few days) and also explained how we do multiple trips every year with them. I mean this one alone is 4500. They were completely black and white about the situation. Yes, it's on the contract but really??? It was less than 24 hrs late. I'm so upset about it but there really is no option to take our business elsewhere since there are no other rail options (I will look into this). It's just sooo ridiculous that they were not willing to apply it to the same trip I rebooked. Chat Icon

It happens! Everyone makes mistakes.

$450 to you is not the same as $450 to the company.

You are very nice to even offer and that goes a long way in your bosses eyes I am sure!
Don't sweat it - don't insist on making the payment.

THIS! I was the manager in the quotations department before I became a SAHM. Mistakes were made by my employees, and I would never have dreamed of deducting it from their salaries. Unintentional errors happen. For my employees, I was more concerned with them learning from mistakes and making sure they didn't happen again. Not sure what size company you work for, but for many companies $450 isn't a big deal.

You are obviously sorry. Don't insist on paying. You already offered. I would not mention it again. $450 spread over 34 people's travel expense is not that big of a deal.

You poor thing. Seriously you are really being way too hard on yourself. Things happen. You've got a lot going on.

But I also know the gut wrenching feeling when you see your mistake and know it cost the company money. BTDT. so a little more huggies... Chat Icon Chat Icon

I, too, own up and take responsibility, but like this poster said I wouldn't offer the amount until it was discussed.

What to do next week?
Just sit and discuss how it happened and apologize again. Talk about maybe setting up a system to avoid it in the future. And thank them for being so understanding. I'd NOT mention the money again.

Good Luck

Re: Work situation WWYD

Thanks, everyone! I will update on how it goes next week. I feel so much better knowing that I shouldn't feel horrible for letting them pay even after I offered.

The suggestions of explaining a plan of action is a great idea. I book all the travel and accommodations for our school trips and have calendar reminders for payment . I was on hold with amtrak last week and I got distracted when someone came up with something urgent. Chat Icon I didn't reset my reminder and it wouldn't have been a big deal if we were not closed this week since I would've seen the amtrak reminder. Argh.

Thanks, all Chat Icon I really could use the $450 for my maternity leave!!!
