Work schedule- looking for feedback
Hi everyone! As some of you may know I am currently in the process of adopting a newborn. We were told to start thinking about childcare (although I feel this is jumping the gun) I would like to be semi prepared. Since this is an adoption we will be entitled to NO short term disability or anything like that! Since this is costing us an arm and a leg  I make my own schedule and plan on working from 4-6 in the evenings after two months to 6-8 months once my DH is home from work.
The question is my long term plan......as a mom would you rather work 24 hours in three days (8 hour day) or in four days (6 hour day) add another hour total to each day being out of the house for travel.
Is it hard to find childcare for just three or four days? We are considering nanny or daycare. Thanks!!!

I would prefer to work 3 longer days than 4 shorter days.

I agree on the the 3 longer days. You wont have a hard time finding a daycare center to accomodate. A nanny may be a little more tricky. Congrats!!

I would definitely prefer 3 longer days & I would personally prefer a nanny come to my house so you don't have to feel frazzled getting all of baby's things together. I work half the week & the most stressful thing is remembering & getting all of the kid stuff together to leave the house.
As a side note, that is bs that you get no time with adoption. Good luck! I always admire those who adopt. That will be one lucky baby!

I agree- I would rather work the 3 longer days. That way you have more of a "day" to dedicate to your child. When they're small, they sleep a lot anyway so you want to savor all of the QT you can get. Good luck with the adoption!!

I'm a sahm to two, 2yo and 4mo. I'm done by 8pm. Like in pjs in bed done
I'm thinking three longer days. Bc 6 hours is more considering commuting, blah blah. Rather have full days off.

I am in the minority. I would rather work the shorter days. Currently I leave work early 3 days a week to pick my DS up from daycare and those days are so much easier. I get home at a decent hour to make dinner and get more time to be with my son.
Daycares can work with you either way.

I would prefer the 4 shorter days. With the shorter days you can at least spend a bit of time with the baby. The long days it sounds like a solid 10 hr day. Either way i'm sure you will make it work. GL!

I think it's awful you get no leave when you're adopting
That's criminal if you ask me! Do you get any leave at all? Have you explored that to your fullest? I'm sure you have, I'm just shocked. How awful.
I'd do the 3 days.

Thank you! In my field there is no paid leave at all since we are per diem workers, however i would get disability had i given birth. I am not worried about my job being there when i get back just sux i don't even get measly disability. (technically not disabled due to the fact i did not give birth. LOL)

With adoption you are entitled to 12 weeks FMLA. It is, however, unpId leave. You are guaranteed your job back after the 12 weeks. This is federal law. However, you are not paid for this time so that is a factor you need to consider.

I totally agree with the three days and getting no time for adopting. So effed up.
Personally though, my son LOVES daycare. It's a personal choice but if you do go that route -- every daycare I looked at offered three day options so no worries!

My boyfriend was adopted and he's one of the best people I know and to think someone gave him up - I can't even believe it, though I "get it" -- but he's so amazing and I'm in awe of his parents! They adopted him and his sister (not blood related, two separate adoptions)

That's great! I've met many adult adoptees and throw has helped me so much because i always had the fear they wouldn't consider me their "real" mother.

Maybe try to ask some RNs who typically work 12 hour shifts for 3-4 days how they handle childcare.

When my boyfriend told me I immediately asked him, do you want to find your biological parents??
And he said no, and not no in like an upset way at all, no like nah - and he said, my parents (adopted) are my parents, no question. They are wonderful. I'm so happy with them, I have zero interest in anything else. And he really means it. It's lovely.

I am so happy for you! I think its terrible you get no leave. My employer gives 8 weeks paid leave for adoption plus a $5k subsidy toward adoption expenses. And that isn't enough IMO

3 longer days consider that they're really not that long. 8 hour days, or let's say 9 with commuting time is not a big deal at all, definitely doable with daycare centers. Not sure about the nanny route as I would assume they would want to work 5 days full time.
In any case, congratulations and good luck with your LO
