Work question
If you have to take time off and ask to work from home because you want to do your work and be a team player and are told you can't work from home do you still answer emails and make yourself available??

No.
If I'm told I can't work from home, but I still take off. Then it's a day off. Not a work from home day.

Re: Work question
No, I'm an hourly employee. It is against company policy for me to work from home. If I am caught checking emails or anything outside of my shift I could be written up.

Work question
Hell to the no... if they aren't paying me or if they are using my vacation/sick/personal time then I am OFF the clock. I used to do this and it just made for a VERY work/life balance.

This exactly. I ignore everything work related if they don't want me to work from home

Work question
No - if they won't let you work from home, I wouldn't check.
I'm allowed to work from home but, I do check emails on PTO - I work in a small team (boss and I) so it's kind of expected.

Re: Work question
We are beginning to implement a large project that my boss has me somewhat managing. However I am not in a high level position. I want to do well and want him and others to continue to see me as the lead. I have someone on my team that keeps trying to step in (the one that emails boss back immediately when she is cc'ed and the email is to me) so I am trying to keep up with the competition!
The days off are because I have school aged children that have several "half" days this month.

In that case, I would check my emails a few times during the day and respond if necessary. Since in a way it's more to forward your own career than to "help" the company, I would do it

Work question
From your explanation I would. It's **** they won't let you work from home. I just don't get why companies do that.

I agree. I *CAN* WAH and do on a regular basis so I am always accessible. But if I asked to WAH and they said no and made me take a vacation day, I would not be available, in theory at least.

Re: Work question
No. i don't get credit for working from home, so why bother. I've worked from home and vacation in the past and it meant nothing to management. So that is why I keep my work laptop under my bed. Out of sight, out of mind.

Re: Work question
Nope. I am not allowed to have a laptop to work from home but can see my emails. I only look at them to control them before I get into work and all hell breaks loose. lol. I will very rarely answer them unless it is something very important that I have been working on. It is usually just to delete or file them away to make it less during the work day.

Re: Work question
I probably would.
When I am off I do check my emails and if there is anything urgent I will respond.

Agree! I did this once and my boss felt it because I didn't answer any emails from our clients. I remember the convo, I said I will work from home and he said basically said no, I replied fine then I'm taking the day off!
