Work place etiquette...
Hi all! I have a question. What do you think about your manager referring to you by your last name only? Like never calling you by your first name always by your last name? Not sure if this is relevant but I'm a female and so is she. Thoughts pls!

I really don't care for that - at work or anywhere. Once in a while in a joking way, that's fine. Otherwise it reminds me of high school boys yelling to each other on the bus or down the hallway

Yeah, that's odd. It also reminds me of like high school guys on a football team. Would you feel comfortable to ask her to call you by your first name, if that's what you'd prefer? And how does she want to be addressed?

It's just a habit. I had people at work that always did that as well. If it bothers you that much say something but personally something like that is nothing to cause an issue for. After working in a male dominated industry most of my working career, calling me by my last name would have been welcome.

My old boss always did - we were all called by our last name or initials. I never minded.

I think it depends on the relationship. My last company my boss did and I didn't mind it. We were all pretty close (like a family) and had a lot of inside jokes, etc.
In any other environment may not be too professional, but I was with the last company about 16 years. Also, if I didn't like my boss it would bother me too.

It wouldn't bother me. My boss calls me by a funny, made up version of my last name.

I don't think it's that strange or all that unprofessional. There are quite a few people here that are referred to by their last names. Usually because we have several people with the same first name, but even without that it happens quite a bit.

The CEO at my old job used to call everyone by their last names. My immediate supervisors never did that.
DH is a physician and they often call residents and other doctors by last name only. Instead of saying Dr. X, they just say X. I don't think anyone calls DH by his first name at his office.

My supervisor does this, both in writing and when speaking to us. Not Mr. or Mrs. Last name, just Last Name. I find it weird and rude.

I work in a male dominated field and people are called by their last names. But, it's usually just the men, not the women.

Hey everyone! Thx for all of your responses! Looks like the responses were a mixed bag!
This happens to be my current experience. It wouldn't be so much a problem but it is due to the kind of person my manager is. She speaks negatively about everyone in front of me and others. She feels as if everyone is irrelevant etc. to top it off.. She's ghetto! The list goes on & on. She is not a nice person inside or outside the office.
I basically wanted to ask this question to se if I was getting upset for no reason. The next time she refers to me by my last name.. I'm going to respond back by saying yes .....insert last name here and see her face when I say it. Pretty sure she's not going to like it.

Does she do that to everyone, or just to you?
Some people around my office occasionally call me by my last name. It doesnt bother me at all, I take it as if they are comfortable with me. However, its not all the time and its not always the same person.

If she just does it to ONLY you; then she's nothing but a di<k. She clearly is doing it on purpose for whatever reason most especially if you say she is condescending to you at times.
Give it right back to her! Im sure she wont expect it.
