Work email question

If you are the "cc'ed" person and the email was addressed to another person (the "to" person) with a "Dear xx" in the body of the email, would you reply immediately to the person who sent the email with the answer to their question??

Re: Work email question

It depends. Sometimes I am copied on emails that go to my boss but its an administrative task so I just take care of it, since it will get done faster if I do it vs. my boss who usually is busy with meetings all day. But normally I wouldn't on any other email unless I knew that person was out of the office and couldn't respond.

Thanks I agree it depends. I would also reply as a CC if my boss was busy or away and it was a simple answer.

I am asking because a coworker on my team always replies as a cc before I do. Doesn't even give me a chance!

Work email question

My first answer would be no. They cc:ed you just to keep you in the loop of the email not to give the answer. If it is not answered in a timely fashion, then I would reply.

This, I would give the person some time. If they dont answer in a while then I would.

Ok so I'm not necessarily wrong for getting annoyed at her.

Re: Work email question

It depends. I am on a three person team (including my boss) and we will all answer an email as needed no matter who it is addressed to. I wouldn't jump to reply for anyone else though.

Re: Work email question

I will directly respond if the replies just never answer the original question, or are going in the wrong direction.
Which happens frequently.
So, I always answer, "Jumping in here, ......."

Otherwise I read it and move on.

Even if it was addressed to you specifically ?

Sometimes my boss will write " dear xx and yy" this was just "dear xx" (me).

Not unless it's something I know the addressee doesn't know. When it's one of my staff members if they don't answer after a few hours I will fwd them as a reminder. I think answering themselves helps build their professional relationships- they can't do that if I'm constantly jumping in and answering for them.

Re: Work email question

Our office has a buddy system. If my buddy is out I reply. If not I give the person a bit to reply.

Again it really depends on what it is and who it's from. Technically all three of us are responsible for providing the same info more or less but for whatever reason a certain person may always defer to asking me a question even if it's more my coworkers specialty and vice versa. In that case, my boss or coworker may chime in and I'm cool with that.

Now if my boss is asking for something specific of my coworker, I won't step on their toes and do what is asked until I discuss it with them first. If they are in a meeting or something and it's a quick thing I may jump in but I would preface it with saying I am just helping because they are away. We also all sit right next to each other in a row so stuff like that rarely happens.

Yes- this would annoy me if it happened all the time.
Sometimes I will respond if the sender should have had me as the main person & the other person won't have the answer.
