Woman holding sign and panhandling
They are on every street corner and in the subways by my office. The ones that have dogs with them break my heart. While I will not give money because of all the scammers out there, there have been a few that I have asked if they need or want food and have given them whatever food I have on me. I saw one woman on my home on a Friday that I hadn't been feeling well and so had a lot of stuff leftover from the week. I gave her 3 pieces of fruit, granola bars, yogurt and a sandwich. She genuinely seemed grateful, and because I know there are people out there like her, I will always offer them food if I have any.

I agree, its easy for everyone on this site to assume its all a scam and a % might be, but somewhere in the middle of all is a person in need. Long islanders in general don't like to accept that.
Actually, the panhandling on the street is pretty much always a scam. Truly needy people aren't standing on the corner begging. They're just not. Sorry, but this is textbook drug addicts/scammers who do this for a living. It's sad, but it's true.
There are PLENTY of needy people. Most LI'ers actually DO know that, which is why the panhandling works so well. These losers prey on people's guilt.
How do you know this? Do you work in social services?
