wisdom tooth extraction

I have to get my last wisdom tooth extracted tomorrow. I'm 25.5 weeks pregnant and the OB seemed to think it was fine. The oral surgeon is just going to use novacaine without epinephrine. It is a top tooth so it shouldn't be as hard as the bottom ones. Even though the oral surgeon says they do it all the time and my Ob says its ok... i'm still a little worried. The pain was annoying over the weekend... worse thsi morning.. now it doesn't seem as bad. My dentist wouldn't do much... just looked at it and said the gum was swollen and looked infected and I should have it out.

Has anyone had a wisdom tooth extracted during pregnancy? Also..through the irritation/pain i didn't take anything, not even tylenol. I'm assuming I will need tylenol after the extraction...does anyone know how often you can take it? Even though that is safe, I don't want to take too much of that either. Why couldn't this wait a few more months.. ughhhh...

I had an extraction just after my second trimester started, i think i was 16 weeks or so. Anyway, yes, your oral surgeon is right to use the lidocaine without epinephrine. It's the epinephrine that is a stimulant that's why it's a no-no during pregnancy. It's SUPER important for it to be taken out if there's a possibility of infection as it can be dangerous to the fetus if infection spreads. And if you're in pain now there's a good chance it is infected.

I was really scared that the pain would be unbearable but surprisingly it wasn't too much worse than any other ordinary dental work. I didn't want to go dancing afterwards but I didn't feel like dying. Chat Icon Tylenol is all you can take, and you can take it the same as it says on the bottle, but you'll be ok I promise! And, you'll feel soooo much better once you're healed and the tooth is out. Chat Icon

Re: wisdom tooth extraction

I didn't have it out while pregnant, but I just wanted to say that I had a top one out (non impacted) and it was a breeze.
It popped out so fast I asked him when he would start and he looked at me funny and said- I'm done already!

No stitches and NO pain after the novacaine wore off.

I didn't even have to take advil or anything.
You should be fine with just the tyelnol if needed.

GOOD LUCK!
