Winthrop...

Is it true that Winthrop redid their postpartum rooms? Or that all their rooms are private now? Wasn't so 2.5 years ago when I delivered there. I might be switching to NSLIJ because my obyn is going to start delivering there this fall, but he is giving me an option to deliver at Winthrop if I want to...

I heard from 2 people that all rooms are now private? .But I can't find any info supporting this? Anyone know?

I know that the delivery/recovery rooms are brand new suites..

I just delivered there last month and had a private room. They do their best to give everyone their own rooms, but if they're busy , they'll start to double up.

Re: Winthrop...

It's not "private"; they just try to avoid doubling up. They try to give everyone their own room but if its busy you will have a room mate. No longer can you request a private room($250 a night ones).

Re: Winthrop...

They are no private. They have a few private rooms that you can pay for. Its is on a first come first serve bases. But they put the woman in double rooms and try to avoid having to double. But they are a very busy L&D and most end up being doubled even if its for only part of your stay.

We actually called to ask about this recently and they said they still have that option but its first come first serve- u can't reserve ahead, even with a scheduled csection for example.

They must have brought it back then because they were fazing it out when I worked at the main hospital. Probably too many complaints.

They said to talk to them about it once you're admitted-- but at $250 a pop I guess you have to reallllllly want it Chat Icon

I visited a friend at South Nassau after she had her baby and her room was private (I believe they all are there now) and it was like a RESORT! Def jealous of that, but what are ya gonna do....

Exactly. I gave birth there in Feb. and it looked like just about everyone had their own room.

No. I spoke to a maternity nurse at winthrop recently and she confirmed that they do not have private rooms and you can no longer pay for one. They try to do their best to put one patient per room, but almost always end up doubling up. I would not go in thinking you'd get a private room.

Re: Winthrop...

I just toured there recently and was under the impression that they no longer offer the option of paying extra for a private room and that they will double you up if need be. One of the main reasons I do not want to deliver there although my OB insists that my scheduled c-section be there. Hopefully I go the VBAC route and then can choose Mercy or South Nassau. I would def pay extra for a private room, I did when I delivered at Mercy bc DH insisted and it was worth every penny.

Hmm weird bc we called literally a week ago and spoke to someone who said otherwise. I also visited a friend and saw the private rooms. I guess we'll see! I'll be admitted in the next 10 days or so...

Re: Winthrop...

My Friend just delievered there in March... and my Cuz in April.

I think they both had had someone for at least 1 night.

Like my friend had her baby day 1 and slept with a roomie, but the next morning she left.

So if they do have to double up I think they try to off set the days or something.

I delivered 2.5 years ago and they did not have private rooms but If thought they to,d me they were trying to work on making the private to keep up with hospitals that do. I guess they still haven't done it. With that said I had no roommate when I have birth but DD was in NICU for a week Nd they must have had a ton of babies born once I left cause every room was filled with doubles people it looked liked

They do their best to make all rooms private. I was there for 5 days (4 nights) and did not have a room mate at all.

This but we were there 4 nights in mid July. As we walked the halls we could see that a lot of people were doubled up. According to nurses, this was the beginning of the Sandy boom.

Re: Winthrop...

do you go to University Plaza OBGYN? they have been great with letting me decide if i want to stay with Winthrop or go to North Shore. We decided on North Shore b/c he said about 95% have agreed to North Shore. My fear is that they will all be at North Shore and i will be stuck with an attending at Winthrop. so we picked North Shore.

also, i had a private room at Winthrop that i had to pay for. but that was 4 years ago. we only paid b/c DS was in NICU and i wanted to be by myself.

my SIL delivered at North Shore and rooms were brand new and beautiful and all are private. she loved it.

good luck!

I was there in April and had a private room- it was pretty big too. Yet a friend who had a scheduled c the week before did not. I guess they try to give you a private room if they can.

Here is the official word......
All of the rooms are Equipt for double occupancy, but they try to not double up if at all possible. If there are a lot of patients there is a good chance they will double you but they try to mix people going home lets say if you deliver vaginally and goin home tomorrow there is a good chance you may have a roommate today if they are swamped.

They don't have the $250 a night private rooms anymore. Reason why is they want to give everyone a chance at a private room.

According to a Potter nurse (postpartum) you may get a different answer if you call the main hospital and speak to the switchboard. Not everyone throughout the hospital are aware of the new rules in place.

Good luck

Re: Winthrop...

Thanks Theresa for clearing that up!

In all honesty, it would be my roommate I'd feel the most sorry for Chat Icon I'm not kidding. I have a weak pain tolerance and I'm a massive baby ... so if I'm recovering in a room with a roommate, good luck to her. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon (hey at least I can admit to my weaknesses!)
