Winter Coat Car Seat Question
My dd was born in May so as the cooler temps arrive I am facing questions for the first time..
I read online that you really cant put a coat on your child and then strap the car seat b/c it is not safe. SO does that mean everyone has their babies on with no jackets in the middle of winter? Do u just use blankets and then put a coat on when u arrive at the destination?

Winter Coat Car Seat Question
I used a fleece jacket under an easily compressible down or synthetic down jacket (like the Patagonia down jacket). The layers kept him warm, fleece is thin, and down compresses very easily when tightening the straps. I could tell by how long that yanking strap was that I was tightening it the same as in the summer.

I used the Bundle me that looks like this. I also would put a hat on and an extra blanket tucked around her before zipping it up

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
Posted by BriBri2u ** I just saw that your DD was born in May, so you may or may not still have her in the infant carrier this winter. I always took DS's coat off once we got in the car so I could strap him in. Then I would put a blanket over him to keep him warm while the car heated up.

Winter Coat Car Seat Question
I am totally going to miss the Bundle Me this winter. That thing was the best and kept DD so warm.

Winter Coat Car Seat Question
I've always done a hoody or light fleece. Her first winter she was in the infant seat most of the time with a blanket over her. If I took her out I was holding her close to me and we just ran right from the car into a store or wherever so she was fine. Last year as a toddler it was the same, she was in a hooded sweatshirt or fleece and we just ran right inside quickly. I only bothered to put a coat on when she got out if we were going to be staying outside. Check out the carters sherpa jacket, that's what we used the majority of the time the past two winters.

Winter Coat Car Seat Question
Just a fleece for both my kids. And blankets if it's super cold and the car isn't warm yet.
A good check that everyone should do to see why coats aren't safe is this:
Put your child in their seat with the coat on. Tighten straps as you normally would.
Remove child from seat (without loosening straps) and remove the coat.
Put child back in the seat and buckle (without adjusting the straps.
All of the slack in the straps is what would be there when their coat compresses in the event of an accident. If you have to significantly tighten the straps then the coat is to thick to be worn in the car.

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
I've always done just a fleece. If we need a coat when we arrive we put it on in the car once we get there. Most of the time though we just hurry into wherever we are going. I rarely wear a winter coat myself anymore, just a vest.

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
Lands End Squall. SUper thin but super warm This was for when she was bigger in the convertible car seat .
I had the shower cap type cover when she was really small in the infant carrier seat. No coat- just that and a blanket over her.

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
Sweatshirt or fleece and blanket for the car. I put a heavy coat on when I take him out of the car. No heavy coats under the straps of the car seat. It's too dangerous.

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
DD is a December baby. I put her in a sherpa bunting or sherpa coat. Both lightweight but warm. I also used the Bundle Me.

Used this exactly and will this winter since she'll probably still be in the infant seat.

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
My DD was born in May. By November we moved her to the convertible car seat. We used one piece fleece bunting. It was thin, not puffy and very warm. Now that she is older we use the lands end squall jacket.

She wears it all winter. It's rated for very cold weather but it's not heavy at all and it's perfect for every day.

Winter Coat Car Seat Question
When dd was an infant I just used the bundle me or blankets to keep her warm.
Now that she's older it's a little trickier. I buy two piece coats that unzipped into 2 layers. She wears the fleece part in the car.

Re: Winter Coat Car Seat Question
Most of last year I used the fleece jacket from carters and threw a really warm blanket over her for the house-to-car dash! My mil had bought her a winter coat but it was too poufy for the car. That I used more when I took her for a walk, etc.

I did this in NY. (which is where she was until she went into a convertible.) No coat. Just that shower cap thingie bopper and blanket. Remembering that they wanted her room so cool (68?) she never got cold and was always comfy. I just pulled the whole mess out when we got where we were going.
You really don't spend THAT much time out in the cold, just to and from mostly. Also we used auto start to warm up our car. She went from toasty warm to toasty warm :D
