I think piano in a few years. I always wanted to learn when I was a kid but my parents couldn't afford one, so now I can live vicariously through my kids.

yes- piano around age 5
I think if you start w/ piano it gives them the basics and they can pick up another instrument in school.

DS played the trumpet in school and I know he would love DS to play that insturment, but would love it if he were musical so the choice is all his. Well, maybe not the drums Chat Icon

I played flute and if I ever have a daighter I would encourage that. I am sorry I stopped and wish I remembered more.

I would like to start with Piano, i spoke with a patient once who taught and she said 7-8 was the ideal age to start them. Once piano is established would like to see if she would want to do another instrument.

ITA, but I always wanted to learn piano as a kid, but never did and would encourage DD to try when she's school age. Otherwise we'll wait till they introduce instruments in school.

DH plays several instruments.

He plays and sings to them almost daily.

He'll probably be their first teacher and then if they like it will continue with formal lessons.

Well, yes, and I am already teaching her. She can keep a beat on the drums and can mimick patterns that I play. She can also play some piano. Music is not an option, she will always be involved in music in some way or form because I truly feel it's the bridge between all areas of academic and personal life.

Yes we will definitely encourage music lessons for both. DH & I are both musicians (or were anyway) and come from musical families.

I think G will start Piano and drums next year. We are trying to find a teacher that will train at age 3. He seems to like the drums and piano - when he hears them, he tries to mimic them.

We plan to encourage them to try as many instruments as they like. I played 6 instruments by the time I was in college, so I think it is definitely possible to play more than one.

yes I agree 100%. I did not learn piano until college and I had a very tough time learning it (and even now it is my weakest instrument by far). I also think that havng an understanding of composition in inherent in learning the piano.

Re: Will you be sending your child for music lessons and...

Definitely the piano - both DH and myself took piano lessons and then branched out into other instruments. Charlotte has long fingers so maybe she'll take up the violin too LOL

She's getting a mini upright piano for Christmas this year...but I probably won't start her on a real piano until around 4...or maybe whenever she asks to start.

We may when she is older. We're lucky though, my best friend is a music teacher and plays violin, cello, guitar, piano, etc. so if we do want her to learn she will get free lessons from the best!! Chat Icon

I definitley want him to take up an instrument. I played the flute and have always wanted to learn piano as well.
We may start with piano, then, when the school offers, we will let him pick. He LOVES to drum and bang things on tables, the floor, even the bricks of the fire place...We may have a drummer on our hands.

From the looks of it so far, it looks like DD will be very interested in music lessions. We plan to start with piano and maybe violin after that. She is mesmerized by string instruments.

Re: Will you be sending your child for music lessons and...

We will encourage music lessons. DH would like her to play the clarinet because he played it and because he can have his cleaned up for her to use. I would rather she choose one she likes. Piano would be wonderful but we won't be buying one and I think she should be able to practice as frequently as she should in order to make the lessons worth it. Absolute NO's in terms of instruments:

drums
tuba
harp
bass (bass guitar is ok)

basically, anything she cannot transport herself (with the exception of the piano if we owned one) is off limits.

Re: Will you be sending your child for music lessons and...

I would love DS to learn Piano. I always wanted to learn but never did. Maybe around age 5.

I played Clarinet (started age 7), Alto Sax, and Oboe. I was always very into music so I would definitely try to get DS into it at a young age.

Start with piano and just see where it takes us.

Jaedyn plays the piano. She's been taking lessons for 3 years....

Lexi just took up the guitar. She would also like to learn to play the violin. Our school district doesnt start instruments until 5th grade though...

Aw, no drums Sam? There goes my idea for Connor's Christmas presentChat Icon

Personally, my dad and brother are both musicians. My dad is a drummer and my brother a guitarist. My brother is also a music teacher. They are already teaching Sabrina some things. She loves to play my dad's drums and she tries to strum my brother's guitar a little.
