Genuinely curious...for the people who refuse to have their child tested in school, and will refuse the vaccine, what is your solution? Without testing and without a vaccine, life will NEVER go back to normal. How is anyone ok with that?

I would allow my daughter to get tested. I question how effective testing kids in school is since it doesn't spread in schools and they are using a test that isn't known for it's accuracy but if the state wants to do that and thinks that will save the world- have at it.

For the vaccine- if they mandate it to attend school I have no choice. If they don't, not sure I'd give it to my child. Covid has been shown to be very very mild in kids. Vaccinate the adults to protect the population. Adults need the protection more than young children

I agree, but I wasn't directing the question at people who disagree but will allow it. I see people, not just on here but in general, who say they will never allow testing, never give their child the vaccine, but they better keep schools open for their kid.

I'm pretty confident Cuomo is going to mandate the vaccine for students to be allowed in schools. If they do not get the vaccine they will not be allowed to go to school. So they will be like all the other anti vaxxers who had to home school this year. The issue will be next September because we do not know if everyone will be able to get the vaccine by the start of school, so they can't really penalize the students if the vaccine was not available. I foresee remote learning still being a think in September.

I personally don’t agree with the school testing. I want to know what the procedure will be. Covid is not spreading IN school, especially at the elementary level. And the rapid tests have proved to not be accurate. I just don’t see the point of all of this. Temperatures are taken as students walk in, parents have to fill out a survey, masks are worn all, desk shields are up, classes do not inter-mingle....what more do they want??

So I was reading Newsday today and Cuomo was quoted as saying he won't mandate the vaccine.
At least not in the beginning.

A state official said the first batches should be enough to cover all nursing home residents and staff across the state, though Cuomo said he expects some people at those facilities will opt not to be vaccinated. He added he won't mandate it, either.

Instead, he hopes a state public education campaign convinces skeptics that the vaccine can save lives.

Between 75% and 85% of people would need to be vaccinated to allow the country to return to normalcy, Cuomo said, citing the projections of experts.

"That is a tremendously high percentage on every level, administration of it and acceptance of it," Cuomo said.

There are about 85,000 nursing home residents in the state, and 130,000 staff members in the facilities, for a total of 215,000 people eligible for the first tranche, Cuomo and his aides said. However, since officials expect not all 215,000 will want to be vaccinated, some doses should be available for health care workers.

They are being given the opportunity -- the first opportunity -- to get these vaccines. No one is making them take them. That is up to them. If i am in that age bracket and community the risk of not getting the vaccine is larger than getting it. If they didnt make it available to the elderly first people would be up in arms over that. No win situation.

As for me, once it becomes widely available i am going to take it. There are tons of people who are compromised and cannot take it. For the safety of those people those who are healthy should take it and get us to that herd immunity. Life needs to go back to normal.
As for my kids, they wont be taking it any time soon -- and they wont be pushing it out to them because it just hasnt been tested yet. According to the physicians I have seen interviewed they wont begin to test that until next year and that will take a lot of time. So i wouldnt waste any time being concerned about that vaccine becoming mandatory this September. Just doesnt seem like a realistic timeline.

So if they’re putting pressure for the majority of people to get the vaccine to achieve “herd immunity”, then obtaining natural herd immunity if more than possible. Interesting cause the last I heard there was a lot of speculations about covid immunity lasting very little.

Natural herd immunity would cost A LOT of lives and would most likely collapse the hospital system.

How so considering many people have already caught it (asymptomatics for sure being the majority)? Also there’s a high survival rate for covid, and before someone gives me the evil eye, I understand every life is important. Unfortunately it is a virus we’re talking about and compared to other viruses, it indeed has a high survival rate. Catching it is not a guarantee that u’ll be hospitalized, there are not even considerable chances to be hospitalized. I think if vaccines came without a risk (side effects/adverse reactions, short and long term), it’d be the perfect solution to have it but that’s not the reality, especially with a vaccine done in just a few months and with zero liability from those companies that made it. Considering all the pros and cons, I believe natural herd immunity (which we already are on our path to that) is our best bet.

This.

https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-02948-4

^^^ From a peer-reviewed British journal.
Quotes:

“But epidemiologists have repeatedly smacked down such ideas. “Surrendering to the virus” is not a defensible plan, says Kristian Andersen, an immunologist at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California. Such an approach would lead to a catastrophic loss of human lives without necessarily speeding up society’s return to normal, he says. “We have never
successfully been able to do it before, and it will lead to unacceptable and unnecessary untold human death and suffering.”
[...]

Many researchers say pursuing herd immunity is a bad idea. “Attempting to reach herd immunity via targeted infections is simply ludicrous,” Andersen says. “In the US, probably one to two million people would die.” “

I’m not interested in being in an experiment like that. If you want to be, then fine, but I’ll listen to the scientists on this one.

How about also considering all those who got it, recovered fine (not in the hospital) but are still suffering? People have lingering symptoms like body aches, headaches, fatigue, no taste. The effects of the virus itself are still not known.

So use the nursing homes as guinea pigs. First he killed the people in them and not this. Chat Icon Chat Icon

My concern is the vaccine will cause those lingering effects as well.
It hasn't been out long enough to know the true long term effects of it.
By the time I'm high risk enough in age to consider taking it, hopefully we'll know more.

Will you allow your children to be covid tested?

For our first round, the percentage of those who tested that tested positive was higher than the 5% cluster rate so they are going to have to test another 20%. They sent a survey around today since we are remote next week as well to see if anyone plans on sending their kids in during December. I said no because my kids would only be in 4 days and they want to spend Christmas with their grandparents. Since the first 20% testing shut us down, I have no hopes for the second round. Well, i guess if they do it - it won’t be any school spread to start since they haven’t been there in 2 to 2.5 weeks once the next testing starts. They hopefully will resume on 1/4.
