Wild Toddler!
Hi Girls,
Question for moms of toddlers!! My son (12.5 months) is very, I'd say, "spirited." He is ALWAYS on the go, which is awesome because it means he is healthy and happy, so I am very grateful. However, it makes it very difficult to teach him things. He loves books and all his toys but tends to play with one thing for a minute or less and then move on. If I try to show him a puzzle or book or whatever it is with all the farm animals and name them, he is interested for such a short amount of time and then "runs" off to the next thing ("run" is in quotes because he is 12 months and not quite walking yet, so he speed crawls everywhere). Then he will play with something else for 30 seconds and speed crawl off to the next thing. He would much prefer to empty all my shelves and rip apart paper towels than sit and learn. He is a smart boy and learned "mama" and "dada" and a few other words at a young age. He also started to say "Hi, Dad" very clearly at ten months and says it all the time. He does pat-a-cake, itzy bitzy spider, etc. but I taught him those games in his high chair because it's the only time we can really interact face to face - otherwise he is on the go and not interested in what I have to say. (That is, until I put him down somewhere and walk away - then all he can think about is yelling "mom" so I will come back! Suddenly he is my biggest fan lol.) Anyway, I'm trying to teach him more words and names of animals and objects but it seems difficult to do so. Has anyone else had this problem? (FYI: I am a SAHM.) TIA!

Wild Toddler!
This is completely normal. He doesnt need to be sitting still to teach him things. He probably wont sit still for a few years. Just teach and show around it. This is what they do at this age. You'll make yourself nuts otherwise.

This is exactly my 10-month-old DD. I was starting to wonder if she had ADD because she'll focus on a toy for about 15 seconds before moving on to something else.

Lol yep I looked up symptoms for that, too!! Hahah. She sounds so much like DS.

Thats normal and you cant really expect them to sit still to learn things. My DD turned 2 in July and I taught her words, colors, shapes, numbers, etc but all on the go. She wont really sit to read books with me either. So im constantly pointing out things while we're out and asking her questions like what color , what shape, etc... Now she even points things out to me without me even asking. The other day we saw pumpkins at the supermarket and she told me the nose on the pumpkin was a triangle and she was right!

Awww so cute!! This is good to know. I try to do that with him as much as I can, pointing things out as we go, etc. Glad to hear that if I don't sit down with him and show him things that he won't grow up knowing nothing!
ETA: I have seen some videos of babies even younger than my son (from Facebook) who are pointing out the animal in a puzzle when their mom says the word. I know there is no way DS knows the names of all the animals because he won't sit still long enough to learn them. I don't know how these other babies do it. Although part of me thinks that sometimes these moms video their babies and when the baby happens to point to the right animal, that is the part of the video they post! Lol. I saw one baby recently whose mom had put flashcards out and she said "where's the cow?" He leaned forward and grabbed the card closest to him, which was the cow. Lol possible coincidence? (He then proceeded to eat it. Like any normal baby.)

Sounds normal to me.
Tiny Tot does the same thing at home.
25-30 seconds per toy.lol
She is getting better at pointing to things and saying them. So far it's apple, banana, and book. If I tell her to get Elmo or Busy Bee she does  I have no luck getting any of this on video. Once she sees my cell or video camera she wants to put her face right to it.lol

Wow good for her!! I remember it was only a month ago that you said daycare was "concerned she was only saying mama and dada" - she showed them!!!!!! Bahahah.

This was DD. Well she's not into pointing but she could say most animals and do their noises by a year old. She's very verbal and LOVES to learn. BUT, she didn't crawl ever and only got moving around at 12 months. She didn't have much choice but to have a good attention span for whatever she could reach! Now at 17 months she says hundreds of words and knows most of her letters and all the numbers but she's only been walking for a month now. Every kid has different strengths so I wouldn't worry to much about comparing them.

He actually does say a bunch of things but they're random and not things that he learned from me, per se. Lol. I mean technically he had to have picked them up from me but they aren't things I've actively taught him. Like "this," "up," "out" because he loves to go out, "hi, dad," "Ana" for "grandma" lol... But he won't point things out unless they are thing he uses, like his socks, his "piggies" (toes - we do this little piggie a lot when he's in his car seat and he thinks his toes are piggies), he points out his "bottie," etc. But doesn't know animals or anything bc he won't sit and look at them for long enough. What you said about your DD makes a lot of sense... She didn't have a choice but to sit and learn since she wasn't crawling - so cute!!

Kids learn through play. And he is so young. Play with him and talk to him a lot, he'll soak it all up. We haven't formally taught my 23 month old any numbers, just today I said 10 to my husband in regards to a question and my DS said 11, 12. He knows his colors and all his letters (I recommend fridge phonics) all through play. They are soaking up everything you say.

It's so amazing, isn't it?!?! That must have been so cool for you. You just don't even realize how much they are picking up!
