Widom tooth extraction?

So last year I was told that I have a big cavity in my wisdom tooth. I never had it taken care of because honestly I wasnt feeling any kind of pain. Fast forward one year, Im still not experiencing much pain. Once in a blue moon it might start to hurt (like throbbing usually if I eat something and it gets stuck in my tooth) the pain subsides a few hours later. So my question is, why didnt the dentist just suggest a filling like any other cavity? Why does it have to be removed?

I think its standard practice not to fill cavities in wisdom teeth. Not sure why, but my dentist also told me to have it taken out rather than filled. I waited since I go by "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"

I actually had that wisdom tooth out during my last pregnacy because the cavity was big and the dentist feared an infection and treatment of it would be worse for my pregnancy than just pulling it. I had it out with no further issues.

most wisdom teeth become impacted so they would just rather yank them then fill them and prolong the inevitable...

Good point.

I think this is probably it. Also, I waited to remove mine and they started to overcrowd & shift my other teeth, so that might have something to do with it as well...

Re: Widom tooth extraction?

It's best to wait AFTER you are no longer PG to do or do it before. Teeth problems WILL flare up while PG.

Wisdom teeth usually get impacted into your other teeth. Hence why they remove them vs fixing the cavity.

I waited until DS was born to had mine removed. It was getting impacted and a cavity.

They can do teeth work while PG but they prefer NOT to.

Having dental work while pregnant is safe, and actually recommended.

My dentist and OB were 100% sure it was fine to remove the wisdom tooth (I was in my second trimester). I had it pulled at the dentist with just a shot of Novocaine. Per my OB's request, the novocaine was without epinephrine, which crosses the placenta. It did not hurt and I healed very nicely. An infection and subsequent antibiotics would have been worse being pregnant.

Re: Widom tooth extraction?

Not preggers, but I recently had my first tooth pulled, a wisdom tooth, and I experienced no pain at all. They put me to sleep and I just woke up and felt like I had several glasses of wine into that nite. No pain the next day, no need for pain killers.

I was so anxious thinking it was going to be like getting a leg taken off and I'd be in a tremendous amount of pain and it was really nothing.

My dentist is the opposite. I have fillings in all 4 wisdom teeth. He always said that if the tooth isn't impacted and aside from the cavity I have no other issues with it, why would he pull it?

DH just had 2 out this week. They are not impacted, but he did have 2 fillings.

the reg dentist said only pull when needed; the oral surgeon said wisdom teeth do more harm than good if left in.
