Re: Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
I had a friend who tried to take her DD to the American girl store to celebrate her birthday. She said the protestors wouldn't let her through with her 6 year old daughter and people were cursing at her and her daughter for trying to cut through the crowd. Who knows if its true but she seemed really upset about it and the fact that her daughter had to be subject to that.

While they shouldn't be treated that way, it was no secret that a massive march with hundreds of thousands of people was taking place in the city yesterday. Anyone who would go into the city for any other reason but to march, especially in that area should have known it would be extremely crowded and probably should have rescheduled.

This is wrong. People shouldn't have to reschedule their plans based on other people's plans. The marchers should have let the lady go to the damn store. I'm sorry. If this actually happened, the marchers were wrong.
I would have personally avoided the area. But I shouldn't have to do that. Traffic, hard to walk thru the crowd - to be expected. But to be cursed at and harassed ?? Wrong all the way. Absolutely wrong.

I was there. For hours. With a baby. There was not one harsh word said to anyone. Kids especially were celebrated and treated with care. People cut through the crowd many times and everyone moved out of the way. In a huge crowd without much room to move, people apologized if they even brushed up against you. I can't say with 100% certainty that this didn't happen but it would SHOCK me. Every single person I saw and heard and encountered was amazingly supportive, helpful and positive to everyone around them.

I am sure there are at least two sides to this story. My gut says this mom was super frustrated about it taking so long to get into the city. Being late to her own daughters birthday party and maybe had a hard time getting through. My guess (based on knowing her) is she started being loud and saying inappropriate things out of frustration. She did post an update this morning that after someone cursed at her for shoving past them that she told them to get off of welfare and go get a job
For the person who said she shouldn't have gone into the city, It was her daughters birthday party that she had planned months ago. I'm assuming by the time she realized there was a march planned it was too late to cancel.

I said they shouldn't be treated that way, if they were. But yeah if I was thinking about going into the city on a day where there were going to be hundreds of thousands more people than the millions who are there already, yes I'd go on another day to avoid the crowds, especially around the area of the march.

Ah, that's different. I was about to say the same thing as the others about going into the city, because your original post didn't say it was a planned party, just going to the store to celebrate. In that situation, there probably wasn't much she could do except to allow a ton of extra time.
And she certainly didn't help anything by telling people to get off welfare and get a job.

I was in DC and pretty much had the same experience.
It was very positive and peaceful. Everyone was kind to one another.
NBC is reporting not a single arrest.

I won't condone the fact that she was cursed at, but her statement about welfare and getting a job and the assumptions she made speaks volumes about your friend's point of view and - frankly - her character.

Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
It's just so funny. I've heard people say that he's been prez for two minutes so let's not protest yet. They somehow forget all the horrendous things he's said about women and their rights. We know what this current admin wants to do with our rights.

Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
I just has to say this is as ridiculous post. There was a protest march. Whether you agree with it or not it was a successful and peaceful representation of millions of people's viewpoint to show the current President what they deem as important to them. Which was a vast improvement to the protests on inauguration day - kudos to the women!
There is always going to be someone that say something stupid on both sides. Do I think there was someone that was marching was rude, of course. Do I think there were people being rude to the protesters, of course. These were small one offs so don't take away from the entire message. People need to stop nit picking every single comment that comes out. It is just exhausting.

I don't know but someone was just nitpicking on my FB thread about people leaving their signs "trash" there...honestly, no one says a word about the mess on New Year's Day or after a ticker tape parade...this was a peaceful situation that did not seem to have much reported bad side..unless you are the Trump admin.

Re: Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
One problem I can think of is, were people prevented from going for treatments like chemo or dialysis because they had trouble getting around? How about fire/ambulance/police responses? This is always my concern. People have the right to protest, but when you interfere with normal flow of traffic, it's not fair to everyone else imo.

Re: Why are people having problems with yesterday's marches?
Im not sure why people are saying it "wasnt inclusive" of all women. No, it wasnt. It wasnt meant to be. It was inclusive of LIKE-MINDED women. Women who want to see the SAME change. Thats like arguing that pro-segregationists should have marched during the civil rights movement.

Then don't call it a "women's march" if they don't speak for all women.

dont take it so literally. Everyone knew what this was about and what it stood for. And if you didnt, then that lessens the validity of that argument bc you werent listening, you werent informed (the collective you).

I'm sorry but I doubt that. I marched and heard/saw nothing like that and nothing was reported about it. That just was not the vibe.

Here is the other thing I take issue with, for those who have shared the viral #notmymarch post on FB. The woman shared a million reasons why these marches didnt represent her, one of which was all of the women around the world who are marginalized. Suddenly, when convenient, you invoke the people around the world. When all I have heard is, "take care of our people first".....now the rest of the world matters to you? When it is convenient?

Leaving the signs is another act of protest. You leave the signs so that all the messages people carried that day are seen together- it's almost like an art installation. It gives people who weren't involved a feel for the event and allows people who participated to reflect.

Bingo. They only care when it works in their favor. I saw this as a response to that viral post:
Saying that western women fighting for equality is ridiculous because women in the Middle East have no rights, are stoned to death for being raped and forced into child marriage, is like saying...
Don't complain that your husband cheats on you, your neighbours husband beats her.
Don't be upset that your daughter was sexually assaulted, your friends child was killed.
Do not speak of the pain that your leg amputation has caused, you still have your other leg. Some weren't so lucky.
These comparisons are silencing tools.
Having to put the issues of inequality into perspective by comparing them to barbaric practices is proof that we need feminism.
I think yesterday proved that trying to silence women only makes them louder.
