who's considering a doula

My friend had one, and swore she would never ever give birth without one again.... she said the doula's suggestions helped prevented a cessarian, and made her labor much more comfortable.

apparently, there are stats supporting her experience, that the cessarian rate drops 50% when a doula is present, and the amount of drugs given is also reduced.

I'm rather inclined to hire one... (basically hers, since she delivered in the same hospital as me) I've heard a few insurance companies cover them.

I'm wondering how much they cost Chat Icon especially if my insurance doesn't cover it...

anyone ever used them before? anyone research doulas?

Someone who is in the room with you and helps you through the labor and delivery. Kind of like a birthing coach.

Re: who's considering a doula

we have hired a doula to assist in pain management for a (hopefully!) natural childbirth. she will support me and help dh support me. she will also come after we get home to make sure the breast feeding is going ok and to answer any questions. in my search, almost all doulas were in the $1000-1500 range. these are all in the city; not sure if the prices are jacked like for everything else in manhattan!

Ditto on all! We hired a doula as well, she came highly recommended by my midwife. My doula works on a "sliding scale" ranging from 900-1600.

We met with her once when I was about 14 weeks and will meet with her again about 2 weeks before my due date. We will have a one on one 2 hour session with her where she will go over some techniques to help provide pain management as well as tips for DH to be an active role in such a miracle.

Additionally, when I go into labor we call her first. She comes to the house and helps me labor at home for as long as possible. She will make the determination when to call my midwife and head to the hospital. She comes to the hospital in our car to ensure labor and pain are all manageable.

I love her to death and am so excited to use her!

FM me if you want more info.

There was just a really interesting article about doulas in this Sunday's New York Times about doulas and how they can both help and hamper the birthing process. Might be worth a read!

When it comes to the birth of my child, I am more prone to accept the advice of medical professionals (dr's and nurses) over a doula or a lactation consultant. While they can be very helpful and wonderful people, sometimes their crazed beliefs get in the way of medical necessities like the article talked about.

Even though I am having a doula, I agree about making one's own decisions. In fact, my doula's contract states she will not give medical advice or offer medical opinions. Only support.
