But people are working so hard, commuting immense distances, running around bringing kids here and there, that there just isnt the time anymore. I actually sit on a train to commute a total of 4 hours a day!!! But I do butt squeezes like crazy! and chair pushups at my desk, just to burn some calories!

You can still make healthy eating choices, it can be done. You just have to sacrifice in other areas.

oh most definitely! I agree 100%. But that takes time, thought, effort, and money. Have you looked at what some people have in their grocery carts? I'm just disgusted.

sugar cereals, cakes, cookies, ice cream, beef jerky (ew!), eggos, pop tarts, cheetos! somebody stop me!

I am in total agreement, I just want to point out that beef jerky is a lowfat high protein snack. High in sodium, but nontheless, not the worst thing someone could be eating. Hmmm, tastycake or beef jerky?

regardless of how fast paced, rushed or whatever society is, we are still responsible for our own lives, the decisions we make.

No one forces anyone to eat, McDonalds, chips, Ice Cream, etc. Thats on people alone.

I do agree with this. But I also want to add that for some people it comes down to dollars and cents. It IS easier to eat fast food, but in many cases it is also cheaper.

We pay a pretty penny to eat healthfully. It IS cheaper to get 80% beef and the like from the supermarket.

Of course planning comes into play--you CAN buy a lot on sale of the 93%lean beef for example.

But for many Americans while it is easier to eat junk, it is also cheaper to feed their family this way.

true true, but there are always options. Get some generic brand frozen veggies on sale, etc. Plus, I think, if you can only afford to eat McDs (which I dont always agree with) then you need to make sure you and youre children are active enough to counteract the excessive calorie intake.

100% agree. There are options that are cheap. Pasta is cheap at less than $1 for a pound. That feeds a family of four. It is much better for you than a $5 big mac.

at the end of the day, it's our fault.

if we didn't buy it, it wouldn't be made.

if we didn't want it cheaper, bigger...it would be super sized and made with things that don't decompose.

is the govt in bed with the food industry? yes

do our lives leave us less time in the home sometimes? yes

but at the end of the day, we go to the super markt. we put food in front of our families.

and in this day and age, I think ignorance is bliss in terms of labels and what could be in the foods we choose to eat. we don't want to look at what we are eating. b/c we need it to be cheap and quick and easy more than we need it to be healthy in those minutes at the end of the long work day.

but we have choices. my son will not have an activity every day. we will not be running around like lunatics going from thing to thing.

we will be kicking it old school.

totally agree.

I definitely don't trust the gov't with my food. but they do not put it in my shopping cart or mouth either. No one is a bigger advocate for what you eat but YOU.
I love when someone will argue with me that spending $4 on a fresh pineapple is out of their budget, but will pay the same for some other processed, made in a factory snack without blinking an eye.

Re: Who do you blame for the Obesity Epidemic?

I voted 'people' - because ultimately we are each responsible for our own choices.

My children eat really well - I make sure to prepare wholesome, well balanced meals for them. I know what constitutes a healthy diet. My children also have active lives - I make sure to monitor their activities so they get a good amount of time doing activities that promote healthy minds and bodies.

My husband is very fit and healthy - he works out 5-6 days a week and eats the food I buy and prepare.

The better part of my close friends are 'health nuts' - people who understand the importance of eating properly and maintaining a healthy activity level.

I studied nutrition in college and through a close friend who is a nutritionist I receive the AJCN each time it comes out. I actively seek information to keep up to date on new nutrition information so I can try to keep my family healthy.

And yet - I am obese. I am educated. I know the risks of being overweight. I know the appropriate steps to take in order to be healthy. I am a reasonable, rational individual. And yet.. I still eat poorly and remain relatively inactive.

I could try to blame the availability of 'bad foods' - I can try to blame the establishment. I can try to blame my parents. But the fact is - when all is said and done the responsibility lays squarely on my own shoulders.

If you are unhappy with your weight - you DO something about it. You TRY. You keep trying. If you fail - you try again, you seek help, you look for other ways. OR - you choose not to do anything. Either way it's on the individual.

**Except in the RARE cases where medical issues create weight gain and impede the individuals ability to lose.

Americans have definitely created a culture that lends itself to obesity. It's hard to break it sometimes. Mom says clear your plate and the Italian restaurant gives you three times too much. KWIM?

I do agree - in the end - it is the individual who is responsible. I have always been on the fit side, but when I gain weight, it's my responsibility to take it off.

I have heard that people in lower socio-economic neighborhoods tend to be heavier, b/c the cheap food that is available is not healthy. They went to a few bodegas in brooklyn and the only produce they had were potatoes, onions and plantains.

But what is the solution? higher insurance premiums? more education? government regulation? How do we motivate individuals to change?

This makes a lot of sense. There are quite a few of us that grew up in this type of household. Our parents & grandparents didn't have information on these foods or the portions we should be eating. I mean think about how smoking was 30 years ago! You could smoke in a doctor's office!
