White noise?
I have heard that using white noise helps soothe a baby to sleep. Are there any harmful side affects to this? It seems relatively safe from whati have read.
Any experiences ?

Re: White noise?
we have the sleep sheep on the go and LOVED it. i never heard of any harmful side effects
it really did help dd get to sleep. we got it as a gift and did debate on getting an actual white noise machine since it was so helfpul. but ultimately decided the sleep sheep was good enough...and it was even better bc we were able to take it with us when we went out and attach it to the pnp, stroller, etc

Re: White noise?
Love ours so much that I bought one for myself recently. We lived right across the street from a train station when DS was a newborn. The thing made a huge difference in how he slept once we bought it. He is now 4 and we still use it every night and it goes on vacation with us.

Re: White noise?
There was actually just a study released the other day about some of them having noise levels that could be harmful.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/03/health/noise-machines-study/
That said, I've had a homedics one and now the Munckin one for DD since she was an infant. It helped her sleep and she has no hearing issues. I still use it at 3 years old.

Re: White noise?
We use it. I used to work nights and bought it to help me sleep during the day. Then when DS was born and he was not a good sleeper we noticed that he always sleeped better in our room. So we got one for his and he loves it. He has no hearing problems. He is now 4 and still helps sooth him to sleep.

Re: White noise?
I still have one for my 4 yr old. He's had it since 10 months when he was teething and waking up. Top teeth finally came through, but he was so used to getting us he kept doing it. Homedics Sound Spa saved us all! LOL I use it for DS2. They are 4 and 2 and I love it. It's part of the night time routine to turn on the projector and music. We have hardwood floors so it adds some constant sound. They both love to play "twinkle twinkle." I use it mostly for the projector now sort of a nightlight and something to look at on the ceiling when they go to sleep. The music is turned down pretty low now. Maybe a drop higher for my 2 yr old's naps

Re: White noise?
They are only dangerous if you use them on the highest volume in the room with a child...I saw that story about them being "dangerous".... Common sense goes a long way...

Re: White noise?
We had one for DS and used it early on. I don't think it actually helped him sleep, but when you're sleep deprived, you'll hold onto any piece of hope at getting more sleep!
I also read the story about them being potential harmful. It's really only if they are on the loudest volume next to the baby's head. I actually downloaded an app on my iPhone to check the decibels when we used it for DS - and this was way before the study.

We use the marpac dohm one. It's amazing. We keep it on the other side of her room, not near her crib.

Did they also do a study that if you blast a radio near your babies head while it's sleeping it could be harmful too? Jeez- these studies kill me!

I use the marpac brand for both myself and DD. We do keep them on high (there are only 2 settings) but I can assure you DD's hearing is ridiculously good. I've been using it for 10 years and my parents have used it for 30 years with no issues.

I would die without my homedics one lol dd was never a good sleeper and it helped tremendously. Shes 16m now and everyone keeps telling me about this recent study... but I just feel like EVERYTHING is bad anymore.

Re: White noise?
Yes! The best. To me it is the equivalent of sleeping with a fan on, or the AC on. It absorbs noise. If I didn't have to listen for DD while she was sleeping I would have one on next to my ear!

White noise?
This might be a stupid question but couldn't you just put a fan in the room to make noise?

We have fans in both boy's rooms, but they're really quiet and I don't turn it on in the winter. Gets cold. My boys like some music. The sound spa we have has a few choices, but the boys like a song. Like I said, i keep the music low. Loud enough just to hear it. When we have company over past their bedtime I put it up a little more, but still wouldn't consider it loud. Just enough to keep a constant sound and drown out noise just incase. They like to watch the picture on the ceiling too.

We have the white Homedics one. I love it, and it has a projector, too. They love watching the "moon" as they go to sleep. I love the white noise for myself, too I love hearing it through the monitor
