Definitely out of sight out of mind occurs more often - generally speaking. But if you are referring specifically to a person's SO, then I doubt out of sight out of mind is more common than absence makes the heart grow fonder.

I think it really depends.
With most things in my life - I would have to say out of sight out of mind.
But with my past relationships - I would have to say absence makes the heart grow fonder

I was talking in the general sense...
If you think of most of the situations you are in where these two can occur...which do you think you have felt more often.

Ahh good point..
WHen I originally answered the question, I took it only to relate to the way people are when it comes to their relationships with SOs (not w/family or friends...)
For me PERSONALLY when it came to relationships, I tended to be the type that lived by the "abscense makes the heart grow fonder.." motto. When I wasn't with the ones I loved or we had split, I missed and wanted and longed for them MORE. However, more often than not, that feeling was not reciprocated ...  which is why I answered the way I did (outta sight, outta mind..)
BUT when it comes to moving on from lets say a jobs... or CERTAIN toxic friendships...maybe moving to a new place, etc... well then def I standby the "outta sight, outta mind" motto .. I can only think of maybe 1 or 2 situations where I look back with fondness ... otherwise, I keep on moving forward and don't look back!

When DH and I started dating, I did a brief work-study in Spain and I'm telling you, I missed him SOOOOOOO much it hurt.

with a couple of friends realtionships lately definitely out of sight out of mind.
For us personally - I sleep away 2 nights a week and when I get back from a trip dh and I are always more cozy and happy to talk.
So personally the other applies.

I think all of us have felt both but i was more curious what they found themselves feeling or seeing more often

For me, I would say absence makes the heart grow fonder. I don't generally keep friends around that are toxic, so when people have drifted out of my life, for various reasons, I generally still think of them fondly. Also, I think when I am away from people, I forget about all the little quirky things that I find irritating, and remember the good things about them.
