Where to take 5 year old in NYC?

Hi all. I'm taking DD to American Girl for lunch for her B-day but I'm looking for another fun stop before we head home.

I was thinking the Empire State Building, but I'm sure that's not fun for a 5 year old. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

ETA: We are going in January.

The lines at Empire State Building are ridiculous so I would skip that. You could go to Times Square (even though that's crazy, too), but there are kid friendly shops there (M&M, Disney, Lego is near Rockefeller Center). My DS likes going to Central Park to play on the playground (at the bottom of the park) - there's also a carousel, zoo, and skating rink.

Central park would be my top choice and then maybe times square or top of the rock if you get tix ahead of time

Eloise at the Plaza....there is a cute shop with all Eloise in there, my DD loved it. Not far from AG.

We took DD to the Central Park Zoo when she was around that age. It was great. It's nice and small but well done. Less overwhelming than the Bronx Zoo and great for a shorter time span.

Times Square was a little overwhelming for my DS when we took him there last (he was 4 at the time)
And honestly, its torture being there with all the tourists too. Kids don't care about big buildings and shiny lights.. they care more about Lego stores and candy Chat Icon

LOL- agreed.
Times Square is a nightmare for an adult, I would never take a child there.
I never ever want to be there myself!

January can be miserable to be outside...
I would try museum of natural history or the Met (focus on just one area and get a snack or dessert)
The Statue of Liberty is awesome... but it's not a short trip.
Loved the transit museum, but it's in Brooklyn (but totally worth it if you don't mind the journey).
If it were me and a girl... I'd do Alice's teacup with the doll!

I would do something indoors if it is in January. Depends on which area you want to, there is the Children's Museum or the Children's Museum of the Arts.

When I took DD to the American Girl store, we were there a lot longer than I thought (we did the shopping, hair salon and lunch), so we were kind of done after the store. But we walked to Rockefeller Center and went in the Lego store. In January, you could do ice skating the Rock center.

CMOM? It's the Children's Museum of Manhattan on the UWS. Cafe Lalo (dessert) and Treat House is very close by.
