Where to live on Long Island???

My husband and I are moving to Long Island and we don't know anything about it! With his job, we can live anywhere on Long Island. We love the water/boating, so we're looking for a coastal town. We have a 9 month old and recently found out we have another on the way - so, we're looking for a place that would be good for a young family. We like to go to dinner, shopping, etc. What towns would you recommend looking at?

Thanks so much!!

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

Depends on your budget.

Do you want a village?
Do you want Counry side too?

Lots of great towns

North Shore:
Huntington
Port Jefferson
Oyster Bay

South Shore:
Massapequa

Out East:
I love Hampton Bay and Sag Harbor

Do you want to be closer to the city?

Village I think. Close to the city would be nice, but definitely not a must-have. With two little ones I doubt we'll go into the city all that often.

P.S. THANKS!

South Bellmore or Merrick, Seaford, Massapequa, Huntington, Cold Spring Harbor

ETA Port Washington, if I could afford to live there, it'd be my #1.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

Where are you currently located?

Will your DH have to commute anywhere?

Do you currently drive?

As a pp asked, what is your budget?

LI is huge and diverse. We could all throw out towns and they may be completely what you DON'T want! Chat Icon

I second Sayville - lovely town on the water, great schools too! Northport is also just as nice, also on the water.

Good Luck and welcome to LIF. Chat Icon Chat Icon

i grew up in seaford (DH and I just bought our house here as well) and so i recommend the towns around the area... seaford, massapequa, wantagh.. even nice areas by the water in south bellmore or south merrick. the commute to NYC is not that bad maybe like 45-50 min by train. Good luck!

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

depends on where he is working and how much of a commute he wants- long island is really big and you could be facing over an hour commute from one part to the other.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

Sayville or Babylon

Sayville has a smaller feel to it which is nice. It's a small school district and the surrounding towns are really nice. The Main Street has some great restaraunts and shops.

Babylon is a bit bigger. There are more shops and restaraunt options than Sayville and it's closer to the city (Babylon is about 20 mins west of Sayville).

Both towns have very easily accesible train stations, although Babylon has a lot more train traffic than Sayville so there are more train time options. Babylon is a bit closer to the ocean beaches than Sayville. Both are comprable in price as well (definitely above average home prices).

Either way, you can't go wrong no matter what.
Good luck and welcome!

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

Sayville or Northport. Both have very good school districts, towns that you can walk around, and nice parks for kids. Sayville is flatter, and there are ferries to Fire Island. Northport is more hilly and on the LI Sound. If you love love love the beach, I'd go for Sayville, for its access to FI. Sayville is about 90 minutes from Penn, Northport about 80, but both are kind of close to major hubs you can drive to and get in the city in about an hour.

If you're out that way you also might want to check out neighboring towns. Sayville is near Bayport and Blue Point, also very nice, but I don't think they have a walk-able town. Northport is near E. Npt, Huntington, and Centerport, all really nice with Huntington being the one with a nice walk-able town.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

If school district isn't an issue (if you plan on sending your kids to private school), Amityville is great. It is a small village where everyone pretty much knows everyone. We have our own police force, there are lots of little festivals and events, and it is right on the water. I have lived here my whole life and will probably never leave.

Yeah - I'd vote Sayville. I'm biased.

The town itself has a real 'hometown' feel to it. There is a pristine Main street that really serves as the heart of the town and encourages folks to shop locally. Spend any amount of time shopping there and you will start to make friends with shopkeepers and start to recognize your neighbors more and more. And it's pretty small so you can walk the whole strip in no time.

There is a gorgeous little bay beach park next to the Port O' Call Marina that is within walking distance of almost all points in Sayville. The Common Ground is a nice gathering place for town run events - concerts, tai chi and yoga in the park, Family Fridays, etc..

I have really enjoyed the school district - it's small enough that the teachers and administrators all know my kids by name and are quick to stop and say a quick hello when we are out strolling through town.

I've been told it has the highest concentration of school teachers and police officers per capita in NY.. I've never seen confirmation of that but it sure seems likely when I start counting how many teachers and Suffolk Policeman that I know in our town!Chat Icon

It's just a really nice quality of life - the people are friendly, the town is clean and there are all sorts of events planned out to keep things interesting - Miracle on Main Street (Christmas Parade, Tree and Street Lighting and Caroling, Sayville Summerfest, Seafood Fest, Bradstock, etc..).

And it's not expensive. Solid middle class community. There are (of course) some very pricey houses balanced by some lower income housing - but mostly it's middle class with reasonable home prices, nice neighborhoods and well kept homes.

I agree with Sayville. We moved there last year. We love it! It has this small town feeling. There are tons of shops and restaurants. There is something going on almost every weekend! I can't say enough good things about it!!!

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

It really depends what your budget is, where your husband will be working and if a school district is very important...

I think everyone on here can say where they live but those are the three factors that would be most importantin picking location..

Also do you want Nassau or Suffolk??

ITA! I've lived here my entire life and the schools are fantastic, the town is quaint, and the properties hold their values. Thus the reason I am staying Chat Icon

I would recommend Long Beach, Oceanside, Island Park if you're looking for somewhere that is closer to the city but has shopping/restaurants and is coastal.

Re: Where to live on Long Island???

Long Beach, Baldwin Harbor and Oceanside. All are relatively close the water and only 45 min by LIRR into Manhattan.
