Where to donate old clothes...

I heard that there are certain places you can donate clothing where they will give you a receipt (for taxes).

Does anyone know where I can do this. I can drop it off, they can pick it up, doesn't matter.

I don't want to put them in those parking lot bins b/c obviously, you can't get a receipt.

I have at least 5 ginormous bags of clothes to donate!

Thanks!

Re: Where to donate old clothes...

I was wondering the same thing. I would be interested in donating to some place like a women's shelter though. I just want to make sure someone who actually needs them, gets them.

But do they give you a receipt? I have A LOT of stuff. My accountant said I need a receipt to write it off.

I actually have some nice work clothes that I'd like to donate to some place like that. (not designer, but nice stuff...some with tags) I also have evening dresses.

And then there is my wedding gown that is still sitting on the back of my closet door lol I'm not going to use it again and want to give it to a good cause. I know there are separate charitys that take wedding gowns though.

Re: Where to donate old clothes...

You should write out a list of all the items and attach it with the receipt they will give you at Good Will.

For example. "10 pairs of jeans, 20 blouses, 10 t-shirts, etc."

Good Will gives a receipt--but it will be a generic one, that says "5 bags of clothes"....and then when you do your taxes your accountant can use an estimate fair market value of what each item is worth and add it all up.

Just an FYI -- you can only use the donations if you itemize. A lot of places don't express that to you...and people donate stuff and then they can't use it on their taxes if they do not itemize their deductions.

The Salvation Army also gives a receipt.
In the past, I've written it up myself and they stamp it.

Thanks for the tip! I itemize b/c I have a few things like student loans and working from home.

I need more writeoffs since we don't have a house or kids lo. l I figure I'm gonna dontate them anyway so I might as well get something out of it.
