Where do you store your potatos & onions?
I'm off from work this week & I'm on a cleaning/organizing mission. There are a bunch of things I'm trying to make better. For example, my potatos & Onions-I always have both & sometimes I kinda have alot if I get them from the farm. I find they grow ears or whatever faster when refridgerated & I remember reading somewhere to store them in a cool, dry, dark place.
Does anyone have a solution for this?
I have a couple of wicker baskets-I just need the perfect place to put them.

I have them in a basket on the bottom shelf of my pantry.
My MIL keeps them in one of those plastic basket organizers (three tiers) on wheels in the basement.
I've heard that if you keep potatoes in the fridge it affects the natural sugars. None of my relatives in Ireland keep them in the fridge so I don't.

DON"T KEEP POTATOES IN THE FRIDGE!! I'm 100% Irish and that's a big no-no.
I keep ours in a rubbermaid box (with no cover) in the cabinet. I keep the onions and potatoes together.

I've had them in a cabinet, not the fridge for a long time now. I was thinking maybe somebody had some cool Martha-ish idea on how to store them more stylish-ly

I keep mine in a wicker and wood tower that I have in my kitchen. They keep much better out of the fridge!
You are also supposed to keep Eggs on the counter, they don't do well with changes in temperature so you should keep them out.

I keep them in a container in one of our cabinets that I don't use very often. I keep onions, garlic, potatoes, and sweet potatoes there.

Here's the deal w/eggs-I raise chickens so I spend a lot of time reading up on this-Eggs that are sold in the US are usually between 4 & 6 weeks old at the time we buy them, which is totally fine. They are not refridgerated until they get on the truck, then they are refridgerated from that point on, so when you purchase eggs that are cold you should continue to keep them cold.
My eggs that my chickens lay are not refridgerated, unless I give them to someone that chooses to put them in the fridge. The reason store bought eggs are usually so easy to peel when hard boiled is because they are old. My eggs can't really be peeled smoothly unless I pierce the shell before I boil them. Store bought eggs are also washed, which isn't really the best thing because the shells are porous & washing them sending any contaimination INTO the egg. 99% of my eggs are perfectly clean, then hens "know" not to go into the nests with dirty feet, they never poop where they lay. In commercial egging this isn't true because of the disgusting conditions battery hens are kept in.

cool, I'm going to try that. I know putting an apple in with unripe tomatoes forces them to ripen indoors. Apples are very handy

Thanks for that! In the UK our eggs in the supermarket are not refridgerated and most people have never seen a white egg like you have in the states! Our eggs are always filthy with bits of feathers on them...thanks for letting me know why that is. We can buy all different kinds and colors of eggs here, blue, yellow, chicken eggs, goose eggs, quail eggs are very popular. I would love to have some chickens in an Eglu at the bottom of my garden...but I think the urban foxes would get them! I always buy organic free range eggs...a happy chicken lays a happy egg!

these are a few of my eggs
tHe color of the shell has no effect on the nutritional value or quality, it just represents the breed of chicken. Most white egg layers are of "mediterian" decent-like Leghorns. Those are the most commonly used chickens for America. Most of the world eats brown, pink, blue, green eggs. I don't have any white layers.

when we were in El Salvador, eggs were sold on the streets as well as the supermarkets and they were not refrigerated! I told my DH that I would NOT be eating any eggs here. He laughted as me and said these are the best eggs you will ever eat. If an egg has never been refrigerated, it doesnt need to but like in the States we buy eggs from the refrigerator section, we must keep them cold!!
By the way, the eggs were the most delicious!! ate them everyday!!

Can I just say I have never in my life heard of not keeping potatoes in the fridge...that's where I keep them, because that's where my mom kept them. I guess I will have to find a new place.
