Where are cesspools normally located? Front or back of house?

Are they normally in the front or the back, in a home built many years ago let's say?

In our neighborhood they are all in the front yard. The houses are about 45 years old.

Ours was originally located in the back (home built in the 50s), but was relocated to the front.

My parents home was built in the late 60s and there's is located in the front.

My sister's home was built in the mid-80s and hers was located on the side of the house, but she didn't have a large front yard, so that may have played a role in that location.

Depends on the house.

One of the things I loved about the house we bought is that the cesspool is in the front. We have a really narrow side yard with only a single person gate in the fence.. it would be a nightmare if we had one in the back that needed to be pumped! We learned that originally it WAS in the back - but they put in a new one in the front sometime in the 90's.

In the house that I grew up in, it was in the back - that's the reason the fence my father installed had a double gate that could swing open to let the truck pull in as needed. It still tore up the grass half the tiem though!

Ours is in the back and the house was built in 1954. And from what I noticed that's the norm in our neighborhood.

It depends on the town, the neighborhood, and the house.

Ours is in the front yard, but our house is less than 20 feet from the back fence, so it couldn't be behind the house. My next door neighbor's house is about 20 feet from the curb, so his is in the back yard.

Ok another cesspool question. How can you find out where it is? Survey?

And also can you put something over it (such as even plant flowers) to keep your DC or pets from playing over it? I would be afraid it would collapse.

I just had a survey done on the house we are buying and it was not listed on there

I plan to ask the homeowner on the day of the walk through

at my parent's house, it's in the back yard. the old pools were tucked in a back corner. they had new pools dug about 10 or 15 years ago and they were up towards the house in the middle.

not sure if you can plant over it b/c when you have to get pumped, they need to dig down to get into it. My parents have a bird bath over it as a marker.

I mean, I just want to mark the area so my child would not play on it, dogs run on it, etc, in case it ever collapsed. So I would put anything on top of it to mark it,I wouldnt care if its flowers that have to get ripped up once in a while.

Depends on how the house is situated on the lot. Ours are located in our front lawn. There was no way they could be in the back yard because of the hills and dense "forest" Chat Icon

Mine is in the side yard but we have a 50' side yard on one side and a 5' on the other side. Weird right?

Re: Where are cesspools normally located? Front or back of house?

My cesspool installer said I can put the driveway back over it and park huge trucks on it.... Mine's brand-new, though, so I know all the details about it.

Mine is in my cesspool survey. I also have pics of them going in.... Chat Icon

On your own, you can sometimes get a good idea of where they are. The drain pipe that exits the house starts off in the cesspool direction usually. Then, if you have a long steel rod, you can poke it into the ground every few feet until you find it.

I had my old cesspool for13+ years and never needed to have it pumped or tended to. The only reason I have new ones is because I doubled the size of my house, and town code required it. For 13+ years of undisturbed ground, I wouldn't mind planting flowers.

Both my houses have it in the front, for ease of access I think. Nowadays, you can have them in the driveway if you put an extra heavy, reinforced concrete top on them.

ours is front. i like it better since i don't have to worry about the kids playing over it.

We didn't know at first, so the cesspool guy came around with a stick jamming it into the ground until he found it.

My IL's house has it in the front of their yard. Both of our homes have them on the side of the house closer to the back yard.

Ours is in the front and we have a dry sump in the back. The washing machine water goes to the one in back. The house was built in around 1961. My parents have theirs in front also.
