when your water breaks....

hello!
I'm new here but am due in just a few short weeks! i wish i would have found this site earlier, lol!

i am so paranoid my water is going to break. if it does, do i have time to shower and 'get ready' so to speak before rushing off to the hospital?

First off, welcome!!!

My water didn't break on it's own..I was induced so the doctor broke it but I was told from other people that you do have time to take a shower and get ready. That's what I heard! Chat Icon

Re: when your water breaks....

with dd, my water broke but even hours later was not contracting on my own. i was admitted to hospital, and they gave me pitocin to move it along. i think everyone is different, but generally would say water breaking does not mean you need to start pushing. also, i think a very small percentage of people actually have their water break naturally.

Re: when your water breaks....

I had time 22 hrs between my water broke and my csec. When I called the dr and told her my water broke she told me to shower and eat something. I think everyone is different.

With DD my water broke in the middle of the night...I called mt drs office and they said to come to the hospital to get checked out. I wasn't feeling any contractions yet. So I got in the shower and then ate something, then headed to the hospital. I'm sure you'd have time also Chat Icon

Everyone is different. My water broke at 1am while I was sleeping. It was a crazy moment and I didn't even think about showering and preparing because you're brain is in this "OMG ITS COMING!" mindset. Chat Icon

Contractions didn't come for awhile so if I had been calm enough, I could have showered. But there are some who get contractions immediately. And honestly, most people don't even have their water break on their own!

Re: when your water breaks....

Water broke at 2:15am. I put a hospital pad under me because it kept coming out in teeny gushes then I went back to sleep. When I got up around 5/6 took a shower, called a few people, stopped for McD's, then went to the hospital. Contractions started in the car. We got to the hospital around 8 to be put on pitocin because the contractions were few and far between. I wound up with a c-section and delivered at 9:58 pm.

When my water broke it was about 2:30 in the morning, the first thing I did was hop in the shower!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Took a super quick shower then I was on my way to the hospital. Chat Icon

Edit - My contractions started within 10 min of my water breaking, they were pretty intense right out of the gate. I was scheduled a for a C-section that morning anyway so I ended up getting to the hospital and had my C-section a few hours earlier than planned.

Same here! My water broke at home & I didn't head out to the hospital until 7 hours later. My contractions were still irregular at that point, but I had lost a lot of water & I was getting nervous. Before we left I showered, finished packing (I was 2+ weeks early) & tidied up my house for when my in-laws arrived the next day. Sure enough, when I got to the hospital I was barely 1cm dilated...I eventually needed some pitocin & didn't actually deliver ds until 19 hours after my water had broken!

Re: when your water breaks....

My water broke at 12 45 at night and I did not have time to do anything nor did I want to. I was 3 weeks early and it threw me for a loop that my water broke so we just called the Dr and he said get in the car and come in. As soon as my water broke the contractions started and the pain came quickly.

Re: when your water breaks....

I didn't even know my water broke. I was at the hospital on Monday night due to some pains, but they sent me home saying I was okay. The next morning at my doctor's follow up she checked me out and asked "when did you water break" ?!?! I was like WTF??? My son's head was acting like a "plug" and holding the water in. She moved him a bit and alllllll the water came rushing out and contractions started maybe 10 minutes later. But also after she moved him a bit his heart rate dropped for a second and they rushed me to the hospital. I was originally a planned c-sec. He was born within two hours after finding out my water broke! And he's perfecting healthy & happy!!

Re: when your water breaks....

my water broke at 2 am on Tuesday

I had DD at 818 AM on Wednesday and that was only bc we ended up with a C-section bc I wasn't progressing.

So that was a little over 30 hours.

Unless your doc tells you to go to the hospital immediately, DEFINITELY take a shower and EAT! something!!!! My "last meal" was 8pm Monday night...i didn't eat again until sometime on Thursday. Good luck!!! Chat Icon

I was watching the laugh and learn dvd and they said that your water breaking is not a signal to rush to the hospital unless the water is green. You should just call your doctor and let them know but not actually head to the hospital until the contractions start bothering you. You should have time to do everything you need to before you go.

My water broke at 1:15am and since I wasn't experiencing any contractions, I took a shower, got ready and headed to the hospital to which I arrived at 2:30am. At that point the contractions started very quickly, increasing in frequency and intensity. I was on Epi at 3:45am.

Re: when your water breaks....

It varies.
My sister's water broke when she was sleeping and my niece was not born for almost 24 hours.
My sil's water broke on the way to the hospital and my nephew was born 15 minutes after they arrived.
I remember when my mom was pregnant with my sister her water broke. She then took a shower, ate something and did a few loads of laundry before leaving lol but it was her 4th kid so she was a seasoned pro.

With DS#1 my water broke at home and I was 1 week early. I showered and got ready before I went to the hospital. My contractions started at the same time and were 5 minutes apart but I wasn't in terrible pain. I got to the hospital an hour later and ds was born exactly 14 hours after my water broke.

DS#2 my water broke at home and I was 2 weeks early. Once again I showered and got ready, I was at the hospital an hour later. My contractions also started when my water broke. DS was born 6 hours later.
