Well I delievered at Southside hospital and I'm sure that you could hear other women screaming because my dad heard me in the waiting room. LOL. Yes I was loud but it all happened so fast without any pain meds. Chat Icon Chat Icon I probably scared the crap out of the other women there.

I delivered at St. Catherine's and I didn't hear anything. I know there was at least 1 other woman in labor at the same time as me. I'm not sure how far away from me she was. Maybe I would have heard if she were closer? Anyway, for me it was fine. I think I would have been really freaked out if I heard other women screaming. Chat Icon

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I had to spend a few hours at L & D at Stony Brook and I did not hear a thing. My friend delivered at St. Catherine's and heard screaming. As it turns out, one of the people she heard was another friend. They had babies the same day.

Reading through the thread, it does not seem to matter what hospital. What matters is what is happening on a given day.

I didn't hear anybody. The L&D suites must have had soundproof walls in each of them. Chat Icon

Re: When you were in L&D ...

The first time I heard this woman screaming like a maniac the minute we stepped into out L&D room. It was like something I never heard before. Luckily I laughed it off but it did scare me at first - like is this what I am in for?? I was very quiet. This time - I don't recall hearing anyone and could care less if anyone heard me - but I don't think I was too noisy but I know I was in more pain than I was the first time so who knows...luckily it all went fast.

I might not have heard many women because I was down at the end of the wing in a bigger room, reserved for twin deliveries.

ETA: What was very annoying were the additional family members that thought it was perfectly ok to talk very loudly on their cell phones in the hallways of labor and delivery in the overnight hours. I know they were excited but the hospital provides a lounge for them to make all of their phone calls w/o disturbing others. The nurses should not have to tell people to stop doing such. They have enough to do.

I delivered at Huntington also. We heard the woman across the way loud & clear, screaming her head off.

DH said "You need to push or she's going to go first." I said "THIS IS NOT A RACE!"

Men, hmpf, so competitive.Chat Icon

Wait, he didn't tell you there was a prize for the first one outChat Icon Chat Icon

I always wondered if the medical staff took bets to see who they think will go first, just to spice up their dayChat Icon

Did you hear other women giving birth? I was sent over to Stony Brook last night for PIH monitoring, and the woman in the bed across from me was scaring me to death. The whole unit was packed and this poor girl (the nurse indicated that she was a teen mother) was laboring in a recovery room "curtained" area. She was terrified and screaming her head off.
My first son I delivered in Huntington and we felt like we were at a hotel - I know there were other deliveries, but i didnt see or hear anything.
I'm starting to get nervous about delivering at such a busy hospital. Chat Icon

Can you tell me your experience?

I delivered at LIJ but my best friend delivered at StonyBrook and she said that she heard the girl in the other room screaming her head off

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I was at NYU in a labor and delivery room for 10 hours and never heard anyone - then got wheeled to another room for a c-section and didnt hear anyone either. I was also my doctor's only patient that day so he spent the last 2 hours hanging out with me and my family. Maybe it was a slow day.

I was in L & D twice and didn't hear any screaming, but I wasn't there for very long at all.

Re: When you were in L&D ...

Great question. When I checked in at Good Sam for my induction, I did hear a scream, but only once. It was enough to make me cry and tell Dh "take me home, I don't want to do this!!!".

Maybe bring an Ipod to block out anything you may not want to hear...

Re: When you were in L&D ...

This happened to me when I was in labor with my son. I was 19, sitting in a hallway waiting for them to put me on the monitor and I heard a girl in a room SCREAMING her head off. I was terrified myself. I was put in a room..not a curtained area though. i wonder why they didn't do that for her especially if she was so terrified.

This time around..I have to say I didn't hear anything. Then again..I was the only one in labor that night and they have the rooms pretty much separated from each other.

I think labor is terrifying for anyone..regardless of the age, but it also depends on who is helping you (nurses, friends, family etc) at the time. Sometimes there are nurses that are real nasty..and treat teen moms like dirt.

Re: When you were in L&D ...

I heard other women having their babies while I was lying their trying to be induced. It didnt scare me but it sure frustrated me that they were all "getting it done" while I was still only at 1cm. Then the stupid resident even told me about a woman whose baby was coming quickly that she never made it into her room.
