When to stop bottles

We had a Drs appointment today and my dr told me that I should start weaning them off bottles and just for them to use sippy cups by their first birthday. My problem is my boys always use a bottle to fall asleep whether it be formula or just water and I dont think this is going to be an easy chore. Dont get me wrong my boys have been using sippy cups for a couple of months now but it is usually only at lunch or dinner time.

When did everyone stop bottles completely?

What type of sippy cups are you using? Are you using straws...

Thank you for your help

We used the straw sippy cups. Kaitee was off the bottle by 11 1/2 months old.

DS was off bottles by a year too. I started with the straw cups, but he didn't like them. He liked the take and toss cups, now we use those and the regular first years one.

My ped told me I don't need to take the bottles away. I am giving him a sippy but not taking the bottles away for awhile. Every ped says something different - do what you are comfortable doing! Chat Icon

Re: When to stop bottles

Ive been trying to get my dd onto born free training cups but she doesnt seem to be liking it. But yesterday she actually drank water from a glass (i held the glass of course).. but she actually drank from it and didnt spill it down her face. Shes 9.5 months. Im going to try getting nuby sippy cups with straw and see if she takes to that.

I am hoping DD will be off around her 1st b'day. I just stopped her afternoon bottle (10 Months old) and she is fine and started switching to milk (1/2 milk, 1/2 formula) and she is so much more interested in her sippy cup now.

My doc recommended by 18 months. In your situation, I would try to wean the bottles OTHER than the nighttime one. Once you've got rid of the other ones, then work on the nighttime.

Good luck. Chat Icon

Oh - just to add - my DD at 12 1/2 months still gets 2 bottles a day - we give her the sippy with water regularly and I have tried milk a few times. Just not rushing it, though.

Jacob was completely off his bottles by 12 months...we started him with sippy cups at 10 months to get him used to it.

I am in the same situation. I am trying to read to baby after bottle instead of before it. Its not going so great cause she always gets so sleepy when drinnking the bottle. I thought I could ease it away, but maybe not.

I haven't done this yet, and I'm not sure what's best really, but weaning them from daytime bottles and keeping the nightime bottle for a bit seems best.

Exactly the same here.

At noahs 12 month visit I asked as she didnt bring it up and she said...by 18 months.

So He only has 2 a day and Im gonna by next month make it 1 a day and then by 18 months hopefully get rid of it.

It doesnt bother me , and since its only 2 hes not "addicted" to it IMO..he likes the milk no matter in what container its in KWIM.

If you give more then say 2 bottles a day I would try doing it slowly but sooner.

My niece is on 4-5 a day and just now getting off them at 23 months b/c of the frequency of them, she had a harder time letting go.

Good luck!

Re: When to stop bottles

DS got off the bottle completely at 11.5 months. We use the take and toss sippy cups and he really took to it. We began around 7-8 months introducing the sippy cup and then started replacing some of his bottles with it over time once he seemed to get the hang and enjoyed using it. By 11 months he was only taking the bottle before he went to bed (and getting his formula in the sippy cup 3 other times a day). One day i replaced that night time bottle with a sippy cup and he never went back to the bottle. We were lucky he took it to it right away
