Re: When to shop?

Everyone is different, some people won't buy anything until the baby is born.

I bought a cute little bunny washcloth at a craft fair the week after I found out I was PG, that was it until I was about 6 months and bought the stroller because I saw it on a fantastic sale.

Now I'm 8 months and the furniture should be coming in next week, and I'm going to be picking up a coming home outfit tomorrow.... it's starting to become really real Chat Icon

Re: When to shop?

you are going to get a lot of different answers on this...

i personally bought things for our 'upcoming pregnancy' before i was even pregnant...a few things, before we were even ttc'ing. If we saw something cute and it was on sale - we bought it.

we both figure whenever we have extra money, why not use it wisely on something that we're going to need...

many people feel it's bad luck though - and i get that too...but we always felt even if we, for one reason or another, can't use what we have - we have PLENTY of people to share with!

Re: When to shop?

I was nervous to buy anything due to a previous M/C 2 months prior to my BFP. I did not buy anything for my DD until I was 30 weeks preggo. I probably wouldn't have bought anything at all but the item that I bought was a WubbaNub pacifier that was being sold on eBay at a good price so I decided to get it.

Re: When to shop?

I've only bought a bib for our future little bean (my mom & DH's mom have bought the world already). I wouldn't buy anything until at least 12 wks.

Re: When to shop?

It all depends on what you feel comfortable doing.

Some people buy things right away while others wait a while. I started registering at 18.5 weeks, but haven't personally bought much for the baby. I still don't really feel comfortable buying stuff, but I think that has to do more with religious/superstitious reasons. I'm 31.5 weeks now and the only things I've bought are the bedding, Posh Pouch cover for the carseat, and furniture. I need to start buying more baby-related items soon, but everything is being stored at my parents' house until the baby is born.

Re: When to shop?

I haven't bought anything yet - I'm 16w.
I'm normally not superstious or sentimental or anything like that ........but for some reason I feel really werid about shopping .......maybe b/c I still don't look or feel PG?
Or b/c I don't know the sex?

I don't know .......I say do what makes you happy

We are just the kind of people who in order to save money we start way early. So we can use cash instead of credit all at once.

Re: When to shop?

I'm 18.5 weeks and haven't bought one thing yet. I plan to start shopping once we find out the sex of the baby (at Week 20).

I think many people wait until their shower since they will receive a lot of gifts.

there isn't too much to buy early honestly (maybe furniture). I also would wait until after your shower to see what you'll need also.

Re: When to shop?

I'm 25 weeks have not bought a thing for the baby. I also haven't started my registry either. I may buy stuff if I see something I have to have for her, but I will not be bringing anything baby related into my house until she is born and home from the hospital

ETA: I'm also not having a shower

Besides a few things we thought were cute (like an odd onesie here and there) we didn't buy anything until after he was born.

If you have a shower, I'd definately wouldn't buy til after the shower.

Are you Jewish? I know Jewish people usually do this (not that it matters) but my old boss was Jewish and she wouldn't come to my shower b/c of it.

Yes I am. Although I do find it odd your boss didn't go to your shower. (unless, your boss is very religious). I've been to pleanty of baby showers, and know many of my jewish friends and family that have in the past.

For me, it's a matter of preference, and superstition as I had a very had time getting pregnant and have had losses along the way. My sister who is way more religious than I am had a baby shower.

my sister in law is very much like you MrsRbk....she had a hard time with it, had one loss and has been very 'keep it all away from me' (she's also rather religious and Jewish)...

BUT - she also said when she was almost done - she wouldn't hate the idea of a shower...so now my mom is going to call her mom about maybe doing something a few weeks before her due date...nothing MAJOR - but something small...

Yeah, she was pretty religious, she didn't even really like me to talk about it.

Oh I totally understand, on a different level. We moved when DS was 3 weeks old, so we didn't set up a nursery either and didn't unpack much either.

You don't really need much at the beginning anyway!

I would start looking at the prices of things & put the $$$ aside, but maybe not buy yet. Also if you buy certain things too early & then want them matching you might not be able to get complete sets down the line (ie Graco overturns their pattern stock almost every year.....)

with G I did not buy anything until 18 weeks or so, and I have yet to buy anything for DS#2...

It depends on a lot of things. Your comfort level, if you will be having a shower (a small one vs large one). If you will find out the sex. I don't see anything wrong with picking up a few small things early (as long as they are returnable if heaven forbid something were to happen.

I would wait unless you plan on buying gender neutral things to pick up larger items.

I have a small family so I knew I would need to buy most of our stuff on our own and so we started early so we wouldn't have huge bills right before the baby came.

At 24 weeks I haven't bought anything yet and won't for myself, not yet anyway. If/when I do it won't be until much later and I won't bring it home.

I'm having a shower but all items will be stored at my parents and my poor brother's job is to bring everything to our apt while I'm in the hospital so it's all there when I come home with the baby. I'm just superstitious like that.

that was our exact thinking... neither of us have large families (at our wedding, ONE family table of 12 was all we had and that was including my mom's boss and her boyfriend).

At my bridal shower - there were 11 women (and that includes my 4 person bridal party, the girls obviously).

if you can find things now that you know you'll need...neutral onesies, things of that nature - i'm all for buying them...

Re: When to shop?

We started buying clothes and stuff when we found out the sex (18 weeks)

also, we started registering at that time too.

I think if you feel comfortable, you should buy stuff whenever!
