When to move to IUI?

I have done 2 rounds of clomid (unsuccessfully) with my OBGYN and have decided to move to a RE. I have an appointment on the 30th and am not sure what to expect. I know the secretary mentioned moving right to IUIs because they are covered by my insurance. What have you guys done BEFORE you moved to IUIs? What made you decide to move to an IUI?

Re: When to move to IUI?

my obgyn is going to be doing my iuis but before we got to this step I had a full panel of blood work done, dh had a sa, and I had a hsg, an internal sonogram, a thyroid sonogram and a fibroid removed. I've been unsuccessfully ttc for 15 months so now moving on to clomid with an iui this cycle.

How many rounds of clomid did you do? I've had blood work, DH did SA, I've done 2 internal sonos for cysts already.

We have been trying for 16 months Chat Icon. I don't want to wait anymore, but one of my friends did IUI and it took a lot out of her, so I was wondering if I should try doing clomid where I'm monitored better or just move straight to IUI.

If you have been trying for 16 months and IUIs are covered I would def move on to it.

Re: When to move to IUI?

We were trying on and off for two years. As soon as I saw my RE and all the initial bloodwork was done we moved to an unmedicated IUI. Being 37, I was totally on board with it.

All of our IF is OOP. I am going to do 3 medicated IUIs and then move to IVF (which will be a one shot deal).

Did she say what about it took a lot out of her? Yes, emotionally it's not the easiest.. but nothing TTC related is. Physically, an IUI isn't "hard" at all (it's like the gateway infertility procedure Chat Icon ).. The hardest part would be the bloating from the drugs- but if you are using the medications, you would get that side effect from timed intercourse or an IUI.

I'd say go for the IUI .....

I just had my first unmedicated IUI on 4/5/12. The procedure itself was slightly uncomfortable (think pap smear), but I'm pretty much going about my daily life.

Let me tell you, maybe because it's my first, but this 2WW is torture. I'm overanalyzing EVERYthing, but in this case, I'm my own worst enemy.

I think she felt very unprepared for it not working the first time around and it took a huge emotional toll on her.

I think I'm going to push to do IUI asap. I need a baby!

I think it's all about putting it in perspective. An IUI is not a guarantee.. neither is IVF. Each cycle, a medicated IUI has about at BEST a 25-30% chance of working. That means that within 3, IF it's going to work, it should work for one of those... However, per cycle, a 30% chance is NOT astronomical. Like anything else infertility/ttc related, you need to be prepared for it not to work, hope it does, and if/when that happens, hope like hell it sticks around for 9 months till the baby is in your arms!! Re: When to move to IUI?

IMO if clomid works for you, and you produce eggs on it, there's not a huge reason to rush to an IUI. as long as you are timing intercourse perfectly with ovulation, the chances of conceiving only go up 8% with IUI. for me personally, 8% was never enough to take the fun out of making a baby. i ultimately did IVF so i did give in when the time was right and my stim got complicated. but if you don't want to do IUIs and make TTC officially a medical procedure that gets billed to your insurance company... then go ahead and do a million timed intercourse cycles.

i know im a rare case cause i went straight from medicated TI cycles to IVF, but we just never felt the need to do IUIs in between since they didn't increase the chances that much. i won't lie, if my DH wanted it at the time, i prob would have done it. but we had a ton of fun trying to make a baby instead of worrying about him doing his business in a cup and washing the sperm and waiting an hour and paying copays. im not saying IUI is a bad option at all, just that it's not the ONLY option. we got pregnant twice with medicated TI cycles, they just both ended in mc.

Re: When to move to IUI?

i am able to get pregnant on my own so we tried for 4 cycles before we moved onto IUI. I had 1 CP on the last natural cycle... we would have done another IUI after that except it took 400something off my 10k... so we did one more TI cycle and that was another chemical... before now moving onto IVF

Re: When to move to IUI?

Chat Icon Welcome to our board. I hope you can pour yourself a nice drink, breathe deep and relax as you read this. Our board is great and so many posters can give you great advice. I hope I can make it as simple as possible.

Your first appointment with your RE will be a consultation where they will discuss protocol and the different steps for testing and then the next steps after that.
The RE may want his own tests and SA from your DH for their own workup. A good RE will order a full endocrine and genetic workup. A RI will request a full immune panel, too.

Once the tests come back, you will meet again. The RE will tell you your chances of success with a certain protocol based on results, age, and personal goals. Then, you wait to get AF..

When AF comes, you call the office and schedule CD3 bloodwork. If all goes well, you start a stim on day 5 and they control your ovulation by constant monitoring. The day of iui, you bring in your sample, and the procedure is extremely easy and short.

The hard part is waiting 2 weeks- and that's why we're here. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I hope your stay is short and wish you the best luck! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: When to move to IUI?

Wereu monitored on the clomid....I ask bc if u were not who I knows if u even responded and maybe that is why it didn't work

If u were sometimes it is just a few before it works or sometimes it takes a iui plenty on the boards got pregnant with one iui

We did 5 rounds of timed intercourse with clomid before we went to iui and did 8 before we went to ivf

If ur dx is not mf and ur covered I would go for the iui...it's a simple procedure and although it is not that much it does up ur chances

Good luck

NOPE! That's why I'm moving from OBGYN to RE. That's why I was wondering if I should do a cycle or two of clomid where I'm monitored or move right to IUI.

Yes at the RE, you will be so carefully monitored so that you know you are responding and if you are, they time everything just right to ensure success.

I wouldn't worry about it until you meet with the RE. The RE will most likely lay out the options/protocols that they feel would work best for you at this point and hopefully it will better help you make your decision. Good luck

we did a few rounds of clomid with TI and when that didn't work, moved onto IUI's.

This. I guess i have been pretty aggressive. I started testing with an RE after 8 months. I took my time to get the tests but when they were done it brought me to 11 months and I went right to IUIs
