I bring something but not for dinner or party. A hostess gift or something they can enjoy later, like wine, chocolates or bakery pastries for the next morning.

If the host says no, I bring wine as a hostess gift. Whether or not to serve it is up to the host. I would not bring food if I was told not to though. I look at the wine as a gift. They can feel free to enjoy it later or give it to someone else.
I agree!
BTW, I kind of get botheres when I am brought a gift like wine and then told to open it right there and then. All that means is the person brought it for them to drink LOL
