When does the stomach get "stronger" ?

DS is currently 18 months, he has always had problems with eating and his weight (posted in the past about this - he just refuses to eat)

When he was a baby, we thought he might have acid reflux so we tried some medication - both times he refused to take it so we forced it into his mouth - he threw up.
Liquid vitamins - we tried to give it to him twice, both times he refused it and we kept trying to give it to him finally he tried it - threw up.
Sometimes when mommy is busy and he is crying looking for her, I would take him away and he would cry and throw up.

3 weeks ago DD got sick and a week later he got sick. Running nose and so on. He was sick for about 2 weeks, but every other night he would throw up twice.
I'm not sure if it was due to:
1. Coughing too much which trigger his throw up (like when he used to cry too much)
2. His snot would go down his throat (which I guess is like when he tried the medicine and liquid vitamin, which caused him to throw up)
3. It was due to his cold

I think it was a combination of #1 and #2.

But last night his nose was running and he threw up again.

If it is due to #1 and #2, at what age does his stomach kind of toughen up and he won't gag/throw up as often?

Thank you

What does your PED think? Maybe consult with an ENT? I used to work with a child who had similar symptoms and it turns out there was something more to it......GL!

Neither of my kids experienced anything like this so I would go to a physician, maybe an allergist, or a pediatric gastroenterolist for follow up because that does not sound normal.

I agree. A visit to your pediatrician for a referral would be my first step. A ped GI might be what you need.

I remember your other posts and remember you seeing everyone you possibly can. I would def try a GI doctor again. This doesn't sound right.
Have you demanded bloodwork? Have you seen a feeding therapist?

Is growing and gaining?
I'm sorry you are dealing with this but I wouldn't stop asking the dr and maybe even switch practices since it seems like you have not got anywhere.
My son is 16 months and eats everything and never throws up.

We've seen 2 eating rehab/therapists and 2 different GI docs and 4 different PEDs at the practice about my son's eating.

General consensus is....kids will eat when they are hungry - wtf!

He is growing but is on the small side.

As for the vomiting, I asked the PED about that at his 18 month visit and was told - some kids just vomit easier.

Are you getting feeding therapy through EI?

Oh man! I feel for you.
I have a neighbor who has a kid that she calls her "puker".
He's in first grade and if he runs too much, or coughs or has a runny nose, he throws up.
She deals with it with a sense of humor... as he gets sent home from school ALL THE TIME.
Her husband is a doctor. They've been to doctors. Nothing wrong with the kid.
He eats pretty well... is small but growing.

The only idea I had that I didn't see mentioned was to try an ENT. Sound like it's just excess mucous/post nasal drip making him vomit.

Dd2 used to vomit every single day as a newborn when we gave her her vitamins. I tried for 6 weeks and then finally gave up. At a year we started them again and she took them okay. She's almost 3 and when she cries hard she does still get a little gaggy to the point that I worry she might vomit but so far she hasn't that I can think of. Sometimes if she chokes a little she'll end up throwing up within the next half hour or so. I think some kids just have a more sensitive gag reflex and hopefully they outgrow it in time. As a side note, she's also tiny but I don't worry. I can't make her eat, she's just always been tiny (she was iugr) and isn't likely going to change.

As others have said, post nasal drip at night can cause vomiting. I personally have a really hard time sleeping when I'm sick for that reason.

Have you had him tested for strep? DS throws up when he has strep.

>>Are you getting feeding therapy through EI?

We had someone from EI come in and evaluate and they said its not a mechanical issue its a bahavioral issue so they can't do anything (he CAN eat but CHOOSES not to)

Thats my overall concern also.
He is growing but is on the small side - not a good trait for a guy.

Yeah thats what I am thinking also, the snot going into his throat/stomach is gagging him.

Have not tested him (or seen a doctor for his colds) - he seems to be in good spirits during the day but gets fussier toward night time.
I think thats common afterall even for adults when we're sick we tend to cough a lot more at night/trying to sleep.

His gag reflexes could just be super sensitive. I used to gag very easily. I'm not that way much now but I can't deal when my kids throw up. I gag and sometime sthrow up b/c they are lol. Maybe it is just the post nasal drip. Some kids are just small. My friends 4 yr old is only 27 lbs (same as my 16 month old lol) and she's in the 1 % for weight at her age. She's just tiny. She was a premie, the mom and older sister are in the smaller side. She's a bit smaller then my 4 yr old but doesn't look you get or anything. Just skinnier and a tad shorter.
My nephew is 1 1/2 yrs older than my oldest and probably same height and weighs less. He was also super small at birth and had a lot of feeding issues and others as well.

Have you asked about develmental EI? Like OT or PT? Do you think he needs it? It's easier to get additional services i.e. Feeding therapy once there's another diagnosis. Is he behind on milestones?

and...he threw up again last night lol.

Its very weird (when he was sick 2 weeks ago and now) he throws up at night every other day.
If it was due to coughing or post nasal drip why wouldnt he throw up every day then?

Very strange.

Anyway....I did not ask about developmental EI.

But when he was younger (around 10 months) we took him to 2 feeding rehab/therapists because he WOULD not take a bottle or spoon feed or drink from a cup. He would only drink from mommy. So during the day he drank nothing.
They said - "its behavior not mechanical so nothing to do"
I said - "well, isnt there some way to train him to drink from those things?"
them - "No, and don't try to force him"
me (in my head) "so...why do you want us to keep coming back if you're not going to do anything?"

And EI said the same thing - behavioral so nothing they can do.

Milestones I think he is fine - the PED never said anything like he is behind.

I think some children do just throw up more easily and swallowing mucous, crying, and coughing can both definitely cause it.
As far as his eating, if your gut tells you there is a problem, maybe try another GI.

When does the stomach get

So DS threw up last Wednesday and that was it. By Friday his running nose stopped running.
It was stuffed but not running anymore and he slept better.

Last night I got home at 8 and my mother told me he ate well for dinner, he actually had 2 bowls of pasta (he spit out the meat and vegetables though)
Then wifey came home at 9 and he got excited and ran around the apartment.

At one point he ran and tripped over some blankets on the floor...he coughed a few times then stood up and walked over and....threw up all the contents of his stomach.

ugh so sorry to hear that.

Could he have weak stomach muscles or something?

I don't know. I'd keep going back to the dr until I got answers. This does not sound normal.

ds is 16 months and had refulx. I stopped the meds b/c I thought he was better, but now he throws up if he eats to much. I may start them again. Is he on meds?

I'd def go back to the pediatric GI. If not the one that you already saw then maybe another one for a second opinion.

I would do 2 things: 1. Take him to another pediatric GI for 2nd opinion 2. Open another EI evaluation. I know they said the feeding is behavioral. EI works on this! It could be sensory, textural, a million things. My son would barely eat anything (he was older at this point 2.5 years old) and we had a therapist come and she had great ideas. His eating improved. It wasn't miraculous and it wasn't overnight. He's 4 now and still has Gerber cereal a little too often for my liking BUT will eat other things too (not too many but we'll take it)-mac n cheese, pizza, bread, french fries, fruit. This is huge for us.
