ah, wishful thinking.
yes, MrsRbk is right, you shouldn't test until AF is late, but if you want (and can afford it) you can start testing about 4 days before your expected AF due date with a test like first response. keep in mind, though, that many people who are PG don't have enough HcG in their systems to test positive on a HPT until AF is late. good luck!! 
ETA: i just realized that i may have interpreted the OP differently - i thought you meant when "should" you test, i think you actually meant when we *personally* tested.
to answer THAT question, i started testing at 9DPO and got a BFP at 10DPO.

Not really wishful thinking... everyone's experience is different, but after the first few months of testing early it's less stressful to just wait until AF is late. I'd be in the looney bin with a white jacket if I tested earlier than necessary these past 18 months.
But to each their own, if you can stand the disappointment of a BFN staring you in the face, then you can start testing at 10dpo

I tested at 12DPO and got a BFP with Answer HPT and a digital.
I also tested again at 17DPO to compare lines and at 17DPO that line came up immediately and was very dark. The positive line showed up before the control line appeard.
