When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
Hi Ladies...
I'm new here, actually getting married a year from today!
FH (not DH yet LOL) wants to have children shortly after the wedding. I'll be 32.5 by then and on BCP since I was 18... I'm wondering how far in advance I should stop taking them?
I'm honestly already a little worried about having trouble.
All advise is welcome!

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
I think there are some things to consider - Do you want to definitely wait until after you're married to get pg? If so, what would you use for protection b/w going off bcp and your wedding date? And for me, the biggest factor - do you want to chance having AF on your wedding day or your honeymoon? I liked having the ability to ensure AF wouldn't arrive before or during my wedding/honeymoon.
Many women can go off bcps and ovulate right away. Some women take a few months to regulate. In either case, you can go off right after your wedding and basically start TTC right away.
Either way, 32.5 is still relatively young so I don't think 2 or 3 months in either direction is a big deal.

Thanks so much for your response... I definitely thought about AF, I love that I know when I'm getting it now. Especially since I'm on the pill that I only have it 4 times a year. So it doesn't matter that I have been on it for so long. That doesn't affect anything?

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
It depends on why you went on the pill in the first place, too, and what your cycles were like before that. For many people, they are most fertile the very first month off BC. Unless you have PCOS or ovulation issues (if you were put on the pill because you didn't get your period, for example), then it's a whole different ballgame and there's no way to know.
Personally, I went off the pill 1.5 years before we got married. So by the time we started TTC, I had been off the pill for 2.5 years. The first year off, I only got my period 3 or 4 times. But I was in the process of working out and losing a lot of weight and by the time our wedding came around, I was a lot more regular. Even with PCOS (which I'm still not entirely convinced I actually have despite a recent diagnosis), it only took me a few months to get pregnant.
It might be worth sitting down with your GYN and discussing your plans, concerns, and options. Since every person is different, there's no definite answer to say what's best for you. But your doctor is definitely a great person with whom to start the discussion.

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
I was on BC since I was 18 and came off in Dec. '11 and DH and I will be TTC this summer.
Knock on wood!! My cycles have been completely normal since stopping BC.

I went on because of bad cramps and that's why I am on the pill that I only get my period 4 times a year.
I'm definitely going to talk to my GYN in June when I go for my check up, just always nice to have opinions and advice from girls who have been through it or are going through it, thanks!

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
Whenever you decide to go off BC, try to start taking prenatal vitamins. This is not only beneficial for you if you get pregnant right away, but it also gives you healthy shiny hair, and strong nails

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
I thought it was going to take at least 6 months since others in my family have had it take years and have had all sorts of complications!
I stopped taking the pill with August's cycle and started lurking on the TTC boards b/c I had no idea where to start (other than the obvoius ). I had a hard time wrapping my head around the acronyms alone and started reading about temping, BD on specific days, etc and felt totally lost. I figured I would start researching a bit after we got back from vacation in Sept. Well...no need. I got PG my first month off the pill thanks to an abundance of rum and nothing to do but lay on the beach.
Everyone is totally different and there is no way to tell how your body is going to react. I would just say be careful when you do stop the pill because you never know!!

Thanks for the info... and I feel totally lost on here. I'm on LIW and the acronyms are totally different, LOL
My SIL is on here and was also on LIW, she's right... this was the place to come to get my questions answered.

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
there is no right or wrong answer with this one. you will see some ladies on here got off bcp and the first month they got their bfp! while others have been taking months or even years. Personally i would say get off 2-4 months prior to the wedding BUT use an alternate form of birth control (condoms) unless you wouldnt mind being pregnant on your wedding day. spend those months getting to learn your cycle (seeing how long it is, when you ovulate etc) and then after the wedding use nothing. if you dont think you would use an alternate form (my DH was so against condoms) then i would wait until the wedding. good luck!

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
My cycle has been regular since I went off the pill in August 2010. If you choose to go off BC early, make sure you use another form of protection.

Re: When Do I Stop Taking the Pill?
I agree with all the other posts. It's good to give your body a few months off BCP before you start TTC. This way you will know your body/cycles better. But definitely use another form of birth control or possibly be prepared for the fact that you might get pregnant sooner than expected. You will see plenty of ladies on this board that got BFP first cycle off BCP then others for who its taken a little longer. Best of luck and congratulations on the upcoming weddiing!!
