When did you paint your house?

We don't have a house yet, but I'm curious about the logistics of painting. If you wanted to make a lot of cosmetic changes to your house, including the paint, when did you do it? Did you paint first and move in later? Did you paint the rooms all at once or do a few projects at a time?

Re: When did you paint your house?

i was in an apartment and had to be out. so the day we closed i started priming the master bedroom, and moved the next day. i lived in the smaller bedroom for a few days while i finished. then about a month later i did the den. and last weekend i painted another bedroom. take your time...it's very tiring.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We're having an addition put on, and I'll probably wind up painting all the rooms myself. My plan is to paint the rooms before we start using them. I'll start with DC's bedrooms, then move them in. I'll work on the public rooms after.

That's the plan, anyway..... I'll let you know how it really turns out.... Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: When did you paint your house?

We are doing some of the painting before we move in and the rest will be after we move in we only have our apt till the beginning of October. So whatever can get done I will do and just deal with the rest while we are living there

Re: When did you paint your house?

When we closed on our house, we still had our apartment for another 30 days. It worked out perfectly b/c we had to lay new flooring and paint every room.

We ended up not having time to paint every room so we moved in and finished painting (plus installed a brand new kitchen) while living there.

It's really not a big deal to paint when you're moved in... just be careful of your furniture.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We are only painting the master and doing it before we move in. There's no way we'll be able to move our furniture after! We may do a guest bedroom later.

We're still waiting to hear back from the sellers about our offer (Chat Icon that we're finally done with the house hunting process), but if this house actually works out, I'd pretty much want to paint every room. The house is basically white with a few ugly stencils and some stripes on the wall.

Assuming things work out, we still have plenty of time left on our lease so we could paint before moving in. I probably wouldn't paint though b/c I'm pregnant. I'm not sure whether we'd hire someone or just move in and wait to paint later on. If we waited to paint until after the baby is born, I can't imagine that it would be good to live there with all of the paint fumes. I'm totally putting the cart before the horse though.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We had to prime and paint the whole house before moving in. But we didn't want the baby around the nasty smoke smell from the previous owner or the paint/prime fumes.

ETA: Please make sure you are not around primer. There is a chemical in it that can cause birth defects Chat Icon

Re: When did you paint your house?

We slept on an air mattress on the floor of the den in the new home for a week. In that time we painted and had new carpet installed. We then moved our stuff in.

Re: When did you paint your house?

we painted before we moved in. keep in mind that it's a lot of work and will probably take longer than you anticipate. it seems like everything related to the house takes longer than expected.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We painted the walls after moving in, but before arranging all our furniture perfectly and hanging things on the walls. Within the first month, I'd say.

We painted after we moved in. I wanted to live here for a bit, test out different paint colors and see what I really liked.

Assuming we even get this house, I don't plan on doing any painting or being in the house when the painting is done.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We painted when We moved in. With the exception of our bedroom and kitchen we didn't set any room up till it was painted.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We are doing major construction so we can't live in the house, we figured we'd just get everything done - construction, painting, flooring - then move in.

If we had bought the house as-is, we probably would have moved in - then painted room by room.

If you want to paint the WHOLE house - start getting quotes. Business is slow for some guys.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We painted 2 months after we moved in. That's all we had to do though. It was move in ready. We hired a painter and the got the whole house done in 4 days except the master bedroom. He's actually here right now painting it! I knew it would be one of the last rooms we finished and I coulent commit to a color when we moved in so we waited.

Re: When did you paint your house?

We did the majority of the painting before we moved in. Since we were coming from our parents house (unmarried) we were buying all new stuff. We wanted to have the rooms painted before the furniture was delivered.

We're doing half the painting before we move in and half afterwards. We planned on having the whole house painted before moving in but ran out of time!

Re: When did you paint your house?

I lived in this house for 3 years so far an still have to paint. Chat Icon That is my project in the next few months. But I would suggest painting before you move in if possible it will be easier. That is what I did in my old house. With this house now I have been contemplating whether or not to paint.

Re: When did you paint your house?

Well DH bought our house when he was a bachelor and did some funky painting. So once I moved in we re-painted the kitchen. Then we decided to put an extension on the house so instead of painting every room only to have to re-paint we held off. Now that the extension is done we're re-painting all of our rooms.
