When did ur lo start talking

Ds is 15 months and does not talk. Has hit every milestone and receptively understands almost everything I tell him. He follows commands and will shake his head yes or no appropriately to questions. Why won't he speak?!?! Anyone else have this. Or can give me some pointers. Thanks

Ps brought it up to ped and not concerned bc of all mentioned above. Said he would never qualify for services. And won't even bat an eye till 18 months. I dono if I'm over reacting

dd is 14.5 months. she MAYBE has a few words. not sure if I even count them lol

Does he babble and make sounds?

My DD is 15 mos and has only a handful of words (hi, buhbye, mommy, daddy, puppy, baby, happy and maybe a couple I'm forgetting).

dd is 15 months and also only says a handful of works- hi, dada baba, cat, dog, and maybe a few others here and there. she seems to understand and babbles and makes sounds, the ped said that is perfectly normal.
i get nervous because i see so many other kids talking SO much,
but i guess every kid develops differently.

At that age, DS could say mama, dada, dog and maybe a couple of other sounds that we said were words because WE knew what he meant. He was making some animal sounds too.

At 18 months he was making animal sounds consistently but not naming anything or saying any other words. He would also call things certain names that we knew what he was talking about but nobody else would. Like when he said "Yummy!" we knew he wanted something to eat.

At 20 months he started saying more words and pointing more frequently.

At 22 months it was an onslaught of verbal diarrhea which has yet to stop. He's 2 years and 5 months and has a huge vocabulary and says tons of things, such as "Mommy, you are a witch!". Fresh.

Be patient and don't worry. Boys are so varied. I have lots of friends with boys. One of my friend's sons was talking as well as my son is talking now at 15 months. It was astonishing. I also had another friend who had her son evaluated at 2 1/2 years because he was barely saying anything. It was like the therapist made something click because after the initial eval, he began talking non stop.

Also, we have this book called Baby's First 100 Words or something like that (most boring book ever) and DS loved it. He loved when I would say the word and he would point at the object or vice versa as he got older. I feel like that helped to stimulate his vocabulary.

at 15m maybe, dada and mama but not a whole heck of a lot. Ball maybe (sounded like ba) She identified things with a sound but not like you and I hear the word. By 18m she could easy retrieve something if asked, meaning she understood the word.

She had tubes in at 17m. Still not much talking. 30m she blew up. Just 3 weeks before her 2nd evaluation LOL

Dd had a few words then. A lot most people couldn't understand. She really starting at 21/2 of course she had words before then but sentences and convos. At her 2 yr appt the dr made me list all her words. She had maybe 25 and the dr was fine with. Every time I thought I should evaluate her she would start speaking better lol. Now at 3 she's fine and doesn't shut up lol

DS didn't even have dada or moma until close to 15M. he had a few words then all of a sudden BAM he won't stop talking. He is 2 now and doesn't shut up. My Dr was concerned a bit but I gave my DS a few months before getting him evaluated and I am glad I did.

I would get a EI evaluation.

I was always concerned with DS#1 speech. He was missed normal speech milestones, but my ped kept saying not to worry about it, he would catch up. He did start speaking later than most kids, so we let it go.

At 3 years old, his teacher suggested we have him evaluated for articulation. He failed the tests miserably and now gets speech 3x a week. I am so angry with myself for not trusting my instincts and having him evaluated earlier. Peds are not experts in this area, use an expert, get an evaluation. It's free, and worse case the answer is no.

My son is 14 months and says nothing. He barely even babbles - all he does is grunt with his mouth closed. My ped. is concerned and said we would address it at his 15 month appointment. DS understands most things, and has hit milestones other than the talking. I'm more concerned that he doesn't open his mouth at all, which is what my ped is also worried about.

So I have no real advice here other than I'm going through the same thing.

my son didnt say his first word until 14 months... even after that he was saying MAYBE 3 words (not including mama & dada)

after he turned 2 & still wasnt saying much we had him evaluated & turns out he has apraxia. now at 3 years old he gets speech 3x a week at school paid for by the district

My oldest had only 5 words at 15 months but babbled a lot. All kids are different. By 15 months I think they want them to have only a few words like mama, dada and baba and they should be babbling.

At 15m DS barely said mama or dada at 18 months he had maybe 10 words but he understood everything and could follow 2 step directions (pick up the ball and bring it to me)
At 2 yrs he had maybe 20 words. Then at 28 months he had a word explosion. Full sentences were being formed. I was amazed. I would give him more time if you are comfortable with it and if he is understanding of what you are saying.

My girls are 15 mo too. My one DD is in EI. (sensory and responsive language). She has very few words, but is getting better at responding to me calling her to come be picked up, go to the stairs to go up to be changed, etc. She can say mama, dada (but no to us), babbles non-stop to herself..all nonsence. My other DD has more words, understands everything and outsmarts me lol (brat). They won't consider a speech eval until 18 mo. Many kids have a word explosion btwn 15-19 mo and are talking short phrases by 2. I'm just continuing to work with them and holding out until 18 mo. if nether is talking by then, I'll have them both evaluated, but I'm pretty sure my DD2 won't be approved. I think sometimes speech takes a back seat when they are absorbing so much other stuff.

Dd. is almost 20 months and says very few words (and even those are hard to make out). She understands everything I say to her, but just won't speak like yours... I'm going to wait until 2 and see what happens...

Comprehension exceeds expression and I agree with your doctor wait until 18 months and see where LO is at

My son wasn't speaking at that point but was very receptive and he did not qualify at 18 months but he still wasn't speaking at 2 and had him reevaluted and then he was able to get services. Your dc might just be a late talker as long as there are some sounds I wouldn't worry until 18 months esp if he responds and understands.

PS he is now 4 and never stops talking :)

It's most important that his receptive language in on target at this point. My ped said that they were looking for 3-5 words at the 15 month visit. It is still within normal limits not to have any words though. If he isn't talking by 18 months, I would then have him evaluated through Early Intervention. Does your DS babble?

I am wondering the same thing. DS is 17 months and all he will say is either mama or dada and babbles. Everyone is telling me that its okay, every kid goes at their own pace, but will definitely mention something at his 18 month dr. appt.

I have twins and they are both late talkers, but understand everything. My DD literally didn't say Mama or any m sound until almost 20 months. She maybe said mama twice and jumped straight to "Mommy" Now at 22 months, she says almost everything. She repeats and says short phrases. She's even starting to put words together to make sentences. She literally had about 5 words until 20 months. It was amazing. I was very, very concerned and brought it up to my ped constantly. I decided to wait until 2 because I know there's a waiting period if you don't get approved. I wanted to make sure I could have her evaluated at 2, so there would be a better chance she would get services. My DS always said a few more words than she did, but now she has passed him by. Now I'm concerned about his pronunciation. I'm going to give it a few more months and if I don't see an improvement, I will call EI. I always read about language exploision, but I didn't realize how quick it can happen.

GL I know how stressful it can be and I think I'm always going to be worried about something.

Dd is 15 months and mostly just says mama and dada. She sometimes says cat, bubbas (for bubbles) and she can shake her head no. She babbles a lot, but that's about it.

Around 16 months DS had a word explosion ..it was literally overnight. Prior to that he said dada, mama and ball

Thank you all so much for the responses. He says moo of cow and baa for sheep. No mama or dada and makes sounds a lot w his mouth closed. Think ill keep an ear out and by 18 months if I am not happy w progress ill get an evaluation. Thank u again

I would say between 15-18 months my dd learned to say a lot so give it some time. You will probably see a lot of progress inn that time period. Picture books are great, she loves them. All day long we go over diff animals and objects.

I think all my son said at 15 months was dog and woof woof. Not mama or daddy. He had good receptive speech, could follow directions and point to several body parts like nose, toes, etc.

He's 20 months now and I can see the word explosion starting to happen. Everyday he seems to have a new word or two. He's still not speaking in sentences or anything, but he's clearly verbally advancing.
