What's the deal with that Carnival Cruise ship?
I've only heard a little bit about it- but from what I understand there was a fire in the engine room on SUnday morning that knocked out all of their electric and plumbing systems. I just got a CNN update in my email saying that passengers are reporting sewage running down the halls, flooded rooms and lack of food.
They are finally being pulled to a port in Mobile, Alabama but why couldn't they send boats to evacuate the passengers?!

I can't even imagine what it's like on that ship.

I'm interested to hear what people actually on the ship have to say once they get off. I think a lot of it right now is hearsay. I think it'll be mixed somewhat. Some people will say it's the worst experience of their lives and everything sucked. Others may be more positive and say even though the situation sucked, Carnival did whatever they could. That's what happened after the Splendor fire anyway.

This sounds like one of my worst nightmares. I really feel for those people if it's as bad on the ship as I'm hearing. The raw sewage is what really gets me, I can't even imagine. I heard a report that people were supposedly passing out from the stench being so bad.

Re: What's the deal with that Carnival Cruise ship?
I was watching CNN earlier this afternoon and they had people from the ship call in and this one woman was in good spirits (I don't think I would be). She said that the crew on the ship was doing whatever they could for the guests. She also said that the bathroom conditions were terrible and that the smell is undescribable. But that the food situation isn't as bad as being reported though people are hoarding the food which is making it a bit unfair.

Exactly. I'm sure it's a VERY unpleasant experience, but the media harps on the most negative details for sensationalism.

I know! People were reporting DEATHS on the ship. They confirmed that there were no casualties, no illnesses (serious, at least- there was one but it was a pre-existing condition and they got him off the boat and to a hospital right away), but this is how rumors start! I'm dying to hear what they have to say and see photos of what the conditions were actually like.

Unfortunately it's dangerous to do this out in the open water. While ships do have tenders into ports that don't have docks, this ship was in the middle of the gulf. The anchors aren't long enough to deploy and the water is, from what I've read, at least 5000 feet deep. The anchors are needed to keep the ship steady and with the rocky waters, it would be extremely dangerous. Think of the scene in Speed where they were trying to get the passengers off the bus onto the rescue bus. It would probably be similar to that b/c of the choppiness of the water. The ship is under the control of the USCG from what I've heard so I'm sure they're doing what is safest for all those who are onboard.

CNN interviewed a passenger via phone and despite everything she sounded pretty upbeat and commended the crew.

Re: What's the deal with that Carnival Cruise ship?
It sounds crazy but I'd be interested to hear from people who are actually there.
Hopefully they make it back to shore soon.
As an aside, I heard somewhere that it's not uncommon to have several deaths (usually from natural causes) on a normal cruise.
Especially if you think of the age of some of the passengers ;).

I noticed the sunbather too
And holy plug in! Thank god they have some electric.
And it always amazes me that a small tug boat can pull something of that size.

Re: What's the deal with that Carnival Cruise ship?
I feel terrible for all of those passengers I can't imagine the conditions. I do have to say I agree the cruise response makes a difference. I was on the carnival imagination last summer when we got stuck at sea due to Hurricane Isaac. The seasickness was bad & things fell off shelves in our stateroom like a scene from titanic. There werr parts of the deck closed bc too many people had vomited there. It was tough not being able to get home in the unexpectedt hotel stay but the crew did everything I could to keep us busy. They tried to make light of the conditions. They added extra shows for the time we were unexpectedly still on board. I still am planning to go back this summer. I hope those poor people are able to make the best & still have some enjoyment.
