What's the average hourly rate of a plumber?
Just wondering. I just paid $230 for about 20 min of work replacing a really cheap part. When I asked the plumber for an itemized bill he told me he couldn't give me one since he didn't know how much the part cost. So I asked him how he came up with his estimate and he said he just looked in the book his company gave him and that his hourly rate is $175 -- does that seem like a normal rate to you?

Sounds like a lot to me. I think the first time we used our plumber he was at the house for about an hour, replaced the seating on a toilet that was leaking, and I think it was about $180. That was a couple of years ago. He's licensed and insured but he's working for himself, not a company that takes their cut and pays employees too.

That's ridiculous IMO - my brother is a plumber, I think he usually charges $100 for a service call less than an hour plus parts - bigger jobs get an estimate.
