Hmmm.... I wouldn't say unprofessional looking. But i do notice piercing more, but only in the eyebrow and nose, where it is obvious.

I guess it would depend on where either of the piercings (ie, eyebrow, lip, hoop in middle of nose) or tattoos (ie, face, neck, forearms, calves, hands) are.

I said piercings...but that based on being that "usually" you can see those on most people! Tattoos mostly are not seen. I work with several people who have tattoos & they are hidden under their suits.
I even think that too many ear piercing look unprofessional....I work in a very conservative type of job....I have to holes in each ear but only wear one to work.

I think it all depends on location. My tattoos are in places where they'd never be seen in a work environment. That's why I got them in places where they could easily be covered up.

I think piercings are because you make an effort to put that piece of jewlery in and keep it in in the work place each day, a tattoo is something that in my eyes you could have done a loooonng time ago and there is not much to be done about it now.

...tatoos can be hidden
i think in the business world, if you have a piercing in your nose, lip ,eyebrow, etc..it should be taken out for work. i find those distracting and a they make me cringe a little

IMO-Both in excess can be very unprofessional looking but it all depends in what profession you are in. If you are a tattoo artsist then these things won't be considered unprofessional.

As a teacher with a tattoo and 8 piercings in my ear, I would say neither. I want to say that you shouldn't be judged upon how you look but the work you do, but yesterday I met a teacher with a nose ring and cleavage and thought that it was inappropriate. my tattoo is hidden and my piercings are not ON my face. But then again, I don't dress like I let it all hang out.
But in all honesty, I've met teachers who wear sweats to school and that is not something I'd want my teachers to do either. To each his own.

If they're visible I think they're both unprofessional looking (ear piercings are fine of course). One of the attorneys in my firm has tattoos all over his arms. He always wears long sleeve shirts. I'm pretty sure he's not allowed to wear short sleeve shirts.

TRUE...but the question asked which looked more UNPROFESSIONAL...
meaning a PROFESSION...for which MY opinion would be given..
And if you are looking to get a job IMO BOTH are UNprofessional. Tattoos you can hide a little easier than piercings
And as i said and as most will concur with CERTAIN PROFESSIONS (since we are talking about professional and unprofessionalness) you will be at a BIG disadvantage.
It is just a reality of life...
ETA..the question DID NOT ask if WE (the poster) would judge someone based on either...
It said which do we find more unprofessional LOOKING....
hence the piercing or the tat NOT the person

I voted for tattoos because if they are visible, that is the most unprofessional, IMO since with piercings that are visible, you can probably remove them fairly easily. But I feel they are both unprofessional.
