Five point harness. He will stay in it until he is too big to fit. I see no reason to rush it. It is safer.

DS was in a 5-point harness seat until his 6th b-day. DD was in hers until her 7th b-day.

DS is almost 4.5yrs old and is still in a 5 point harness. I'm not sure when we will change hime over.

DS will turn 5 this summer and he is in a 5 point harness...DD was in hers until she turned 7 so I will definitely be keeping DS in one until at least his 6th birthday.

What type of car seat is your 5 year old in?
Up until 5.5 DD was in the Graco Nautilus in the 5 point harness. We removed the 5 point harness in the summer and she sits in the Nautilus seat with the seatbelt. She is 6 now.

DD is almost 4 1/2 and she is still in her britax blvd. (5 pt. harness).
At the same age, I moved DS to the Britax Parkway HBB with a center strap. DS is still in this car seat. DS is over the 100% for height. DD is about the 75% so she has some time in the Blvd. before we move her out of it.
I would go by how tall and heavy your DC is, rather than by the height/weight minimums.

Britax 5 point harness he had since he was 2. He is small though so he still fits in it like a king.

My son was in the Britax 5 point harness seat until January (he turned 5 in December and is tall for his age, but was hovering around the 40 lb mark).
I was going to keep him in the 5 point, but he broke his arm (badly) in January, and the huge cast he had on in the beginning made getting him in the harness impossible. So I switched to a booster. We researched safety ratings and got a top rated booster. His booster has a back, so I feel like it's more stable/secure than the backless ones.
Now that he is in it, I will just keep him in it (even when the cast comes off...).

For MOST vehicles the car seat and child can not weigh more then a combined 65 pounds to install with LATCH. The seat IS still allowed to be installed with the seatbelt though.
BUT this has NOTHING to do with keeping a child in a harness or using the seatbelt. Installation is a different subject.
THIS ARTICLE simply states the limits for each car manufacturer and also gives weights of seats.
As for the OP's question- DD1 was 6.5 before she was out of a harness. DS and DD2 will be at least the same.

When DC were five - still in the five point.
I didn't switch any of them until they reached the seats max guidelines for the 5pt. Still in the highback booster though now, just with the seatbelt. They were so embarrassed at school. Oh well.
