What to expect at genetic counselor?
i am going on Tuesday. i feel like it is a lifetime away. What should I expect them to tell me? What tests will they do?
The reason I am going is bc my AFP tests came back with low numbers and they are very concerned about downs syndrome.
Any advice is welcomed. Thanks

when I went (went 2 times) they basically asked a million questions. Medical history for both of you and they asked about my family tree and any specific problems, medical conditions with immediate and extended family. They also went over the possible outcomes of having a baby born with my specific condition.

I had the same experience at one (a ton of family history questions)
They told us our options as far as what tests I could take to determine if the baby did have anything wrong.
I think there was a test they could have done before an amnio that would give an indication if there was something irregular.
They also explained exactly what is done when an amnio is done & the risks involved.
We decided not to do any tests, we have a 1 in 116 chance of downs according to my blood tests but all the sonogram measurements were ok so we are just believing that everything will be fine.

did you have a sono yet? Did they check the fluid behind the spine? I know they did this for me at tmy 12 week sono. They said everything looked perfect.

Yes, this test is called a CVS. They test the cells of the placenta to see whats going on and if anything is irregular.
