You can ask the insurance co. for an extension but I have never heard of that, much less one being granted.

Once your DH gets the COBRA paperwork, you will have 60 days to elect COBRA. I would wait until close to the end of this 60 day period - if you don't have health insurance at that point, then I would elect COBRA. The effective date will be retroactive to June 1st. You will be required to make the retroactive premium payment within 45 days of having elected COBRA. This will buy you some time, but if you need to go to he doctor before you elect COBRA, you will have to pay out-of-pocket and then submit for reimbursement once the coverage has been retroactively reinstated to June 1st.

Hope this makes sense!

This is what I would suggest also. Within 60 days if you don't have insurance, pay the COBRA retroactively. If you have insurance on the 60th day, don't pay unless you have a pre-existing condition.

One thing you should do, is write a check for the full amount of COBRA & give it to someone you trust. In the event you need health insurance but cannot make the payment yourself, they should send the paperwork & check for you.

I think you got some good advice above. My 2 cents is I would never go without insurance. You never know what will happen and while my current job has great coverage, I had to wait 6 months for insurance.

Re: What should we do about health insurance??

Thanks girls!!!

So if we wait out the month of June and then want to go on COBRA we can... but if something should happen this month we technically aren't covered right?? That scares me...

I'm going to look into some health plans for FL and see if I can find anything cheaper than COBRA.

I would just pay the extra and go with Cobra. I would be too afraid to go w/out insurance.
