What should I do

My dr told me that the pelvic pressure I was feeling was due to a UTI, she did a sonogram and supposedly thats what was shown.

I had already done a round of antibiotics but I still feel it.

I called the dr today and told them and they said they were calling me in a stronger antibiotic.

But heres the thing, not only do I not have any of the burning that is associated with a UTI I also just took the at home test strip from CVS and it came back negative.

What the hellll is going on, do I have a UTI or not, should I take more antibiotics or not, should I call my dr yet again and be that annoying patient or not?

Please give me your opinions Chat Icon

Re: What should I do

How were you diagnosed with a UTI? Did they just write you an rx for antibiotics, or did hey do a urine test?

Cranberry juice (or the cranberry supplements at GNC) and yogurt help a lot whenever I get UTIs. Feel better!!!! Chat Icon

I got a sonogram and they said it showed a UTI but I dont think my urine sample a few days before the sono showed it. I have bad pressure and bloating on my lower left side, sometimes I feel it in my back and I even get a burning sensation down my left thigh

Re: What should I do

And they diagnosed you with a UTI?? I've never heard of those symptoms associated with them. Does it burn when you pee? Was there blood in your urine?

You can either 1) get a second opinion or 2) keep taking the antibiotics in the hopes that they kill off whatever is making you sick.

Hope you feel better soon!!

I know, I had no idea that they could detect a UTI through a sono, I guess the only good thing is that the sono did not show anything else I would have to worry about. Maybe I should try the at home test tmrw with FMU, it says that you should do that anyway, so maybe I just didnt have enough concentrate for it to show up. I took the first antibiotic, I guess I will give it a few days and then go back if it still hurts

I'd tell your dr. about the at-home test and ask her to do a urine culture before taking something stronger.

you can't detect a UTI from a sono...........only from a urinalysis, and then the culture to tell you which bacteria it is, and which medication is right. Usually they give you an antibiotic when the urinalysis comes back + (the culture takes 48 hours.). They can see your cysts on the sono, which sometimes can cause you to urinate more, or feel like you have to urinate frequently. I would call your doc to find out what your first urine tests showed, and ask for another test if you still feel that you have a UTI. The Azo Standard strips that they sell over the counter are also great to do yourself: it tells you if you have nitrite or leukocyte esterase in your urine, both of which are by products of bacteria. When did you stop your antibiotic? if you stopped it recently, your urine test could come back negative............. and you don't necessarily have to have ANY symptoms to have a UTI, meaning no burning on urination, frequency or blood. Are you sure the sono didn't show a cyst?

Re: What should I do

so heres the thing (putting on my nurses hat) a UTI is a bacterial infection if all those bad bacteria aren't killed it will come back with a vengeance. The lower abdominal and side/back pain is actually inflammation in your kidneys so its more a sure sign then the classic "burns when I pee" sypmtom. All that being said a urine culture would be prudent but since you just finished antibiotics a culture isn't going to accurately show the organism thats causing your infection. Talk to your doc, but take the meds she prescribes, cranberry juice will help prevent but not cure a uti.
and drink a big glass of water before you BD every single time! you'll have to pee after and it helps keep the area "clean"
ok....HTH, and I hope you feel better soon!!!

Thank you nurse Stacy Chat Icon I really appreciate it. I started the new antibiotic last night so I guess I will give it a few days and if I still have pain I will call my dr.

I guess the one thing that has me confused is why the at home UTI strips did not come up positive if I indeed have one. I guess I am just scared that its not a UTI and there may be something more seriously wrong that I am ignoring.

Re: What should I do

did you take the at home test after you had started the first antibiotics? sometimes that gives you a false negative. I hope you're starting to feel better, I was thinking on the sono they prob saw some cystitis (inflammation of the bladder).....and yes I was randomly thinking about your UTI todayChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
