 Step 4: Rectovaginal Exam

Many clinicians complete the bimanual exam by inserting a gloved finger into the rectum to check the condition of muscles that separate the vagina and rectum. They also check for possible tumors located behind the uterus, on the lower wall of the vagina, and in the rectum. Some clinicians complete the rectovaginal exam with one finger in the anus and another in the vagina for a more thorough examination of the tissue in between. During this procedure, you may feel as though you need to have a bowel movement. This is normal and lasts only a few seconds

"Next, your provider will gently remove the speculum and perform a bimanual exam. With a gloved hand s/he will insert 2 fingers into the vagina and with the other hand on top of your abdomen will feel your uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. S/he is feeling the size, shape and position of the uterus and whether there is any tenderness or swelling. Again, some pressure is felt here and you may experience the sensation of having to urinate, but it is quick. If you have had anal sex play or if your uterus is positioned a certain way, your provider will sometimes perform a rectal exam, again with a gloved finger to feel if there are any tears or any weakness in the muscles that separate the rectum and the vagina."

I have a female - and she does it. Warns me ahead of time & is professional about it. I'm embarassed to say I've never asked about it since it's not a creepy feeling but a "bare with me while I have to do this" thing.

Exactly. I have gone to the same female for years - I love her to death, trust her and she does it too. She warns me, it takes a second, and it's like a "bare with me" type of thing. I wouldn't worry about it.

 | Re: A TMI gyno question.... I go to an office where there is a father and son as gyns. When I used to go with the older father, he did it. I go to the son now and he doesn't.
Believe me, I was shocked the first time.

 | Re: A TMI gyno question.... I have only gone to women, in total 6 or 7 different people (I have moved a lot....) Two of them were NPs, not MDs. I had this done only once, and it was anMD that did it.
I am thinking that if it is considered "old school" perhaps it depends on where and from who they received their training.....
