For those that have a huge commute..
like I used to (worked in Manhattan and commuted from NJ 1.5 hrs each way). I have seen a few people post that they are seriously thinking about switching jobs to work closer to home...and I have to say, although I got stuck with a horrible job, the fact that I am usually home within 30-40 min makes my day and my overall life so much easier. I can do things after work, I get more household stuff done.....just food for thought for those of you thinking about it

I second that! I definately don't miss my 5 hours of commuting a day!

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
thanks....i quit today. the commute was killing me and i can't wait to be within 30 min of home again. i think it really makes a huge diff...i need a balance in my life with my work time and my personal time and with my current commute i just wasn't getting that balance at all.

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
My mom was commuting about 3-4 hours total a day to work for a long time. She was getting paid very good money, but she had no time for anything. About 6 months ago she took a huge pay cut (about$25,000) to work closer to home. She is so much happier, and has time for herself now.

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
I currently have a long commute and it definitely sux. I don't know if I would be able to find a position like mine any closer, so for now I'm stuck commuting.

I'm in the same situation too.... oh well.
Most days I don't mind the commute - just when traffic is bad on the NJ turnpike.

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
I would never want more than an hour commute - at MOST! IMO, quality of life is the most important to me and when you have to spend hours everyday commuting, it's miserable!

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
For those of you that switched, was it hard to find a job?
  Did you switch feilds?
I look occasionally, btu I don't see much in my feild in the suburbs --I only know of one company & they are only sorta related to my current feild.
I was obsessed with working close to home for a while, but now I am trying to get a work form home deal with my curent job.

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
this is why we are looking to move into Eastern Queens/Western Suffolk. We both commute to NYC from Central Islip LIRR everyday. My commute is about 2.5 hours a day and hubby's is 3 hours a day (he works off peak hours). But for what we both do, NYC is our best bet. I do enjoy working in NYC. Now when we have kids I will consider something. Problem is I work in media television sales so my only opition really for $$$ is cablevision but they actually did cutbacks in that department a while back, but I have sent them my resume several times.

Re: For those that have a huge commute..
I've been looking for 3 months for a new position closer to home (NJ). It has been so hard for me because there isn't MUCH out there for what I do and it's been difficult for me to keep going on interviews and finding nada!
But the main reason why I am keeping the search on is exactly this...I can only imagine how much nicer it'll be not to be a slave to the train schedule and to get home quicker and happier than I do now!
  Thanks for this post!
