Most phones have several built-in ring tones, but they are usually just standard phone sounds.
I downloaded a free app that has thousands of free ringtones that I can play, and download the ones I like.
There are also free apps that you can download where you can put a song into the app, and crop out just a few seconds to make your own ringtones. I did that for one of my gmail label alerts.
I use the Zedge app.  It has thousands of ringtones, notification sounds, wallpapers, etc.
That's the one that I use, too.
